964 turbo

Hi Guys, just started looking at 964 turbos. Just wondering what the main differences between the later 3.6 and 3.3 were bar the engine. I saw a comment that the 3.3 was a better car but this always seems to be the case when a model evolution happens. Is this the case or does the statement have any merit. I understand the 3.6's are much rarer.

What are the weak points of the car?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Rohan

Hi, I'm currently lookg for a 964 Turbo 2, so I've been doing a bit of reading in this area... main differences are:

3.6 engine based on the 964/993 NA motor rather than the 930, but still with single plug heads
3.6 engine is rated at +40bhp above the 3.3 due to slightly higher boost & different camshafts
3.6 is a bit better off-boost due to the 300cc extra capacity and slightly higher compression (7.5:1 compared to 7.0:1)
3.6 has a lower ride height and different suspension geometry settings
3.6 was the first model to have 18" wheels as an option
3.6 uses 993 style big red calipers
3.6 has a 'Turbo 3.6' script under the rear wing rather than just 'turbo'.

The performance figures I've seen state 0-100kph in 4.7 and 5.0, and 175mph and 169mph for the 3.6 and 3.3 respectively. Knock a few fractions of those numbers for the true 0-60mph times (100pkh=62.something mph). They look at first glance to be not much faster than the modern plain C2 and C4 models (ie the na 996 and later), but these figures belie the fact that they have huge amounts of torque and capable of massive in-gear acceleration.

Also, the 3.6 was made in far fewer numbers, so it's

A) Much rarer and more exclusive

and

B) Commands a big price premium because of it

If you've not got Adrian Streathers 911 Enthusiasts Companion,it's very useful as it shows all the differences between the various 964 na and turbo models.

Hope this helps.

Personally, I couldn't bring myself to pay the price premium for a 3.6, so I'm looking for a 3.3 - they're easier to find (comparatively! they're still rather uncommon compared to a C2 or C4). The 3.3 can be brought to within a fraction of the 3.6 performance levels with less than £2k of mods (cat bypass, boost spring, headers & boost controller), whereas buying a 3.6 will probably cost up to £10k more than a 3.3.

The 3.3 964 Turbo 2 is around £23k-£28k, the low end of 3.6 models start at the top of that range and only go up! Expect to pay low to mid £30k's for a good one. (these are rhd prices, lhd will be less).

I was watching that too. I'm surprised it didn't go any higher - that's about £10k less than the going rate.

Bit too many miles for me, but would certainly be a cheap way to own a turbo - even if it did need work. Wonder what his reserve was though?

Megatron,
89K is not a problem for these cars. Service history more important than mileage. Anyway, I know red is not your fave!
BTW, unless there are some hidden nasties, that looked like a nice car. Can't tell too much from the pics but looked like lowered and sports exhaust.

It's just my personal preference for mileage as I'll be using mine quite regulary (so don't particulary want to start off with many); not saying that it was a high mileage car.

Did anyone else notice the wierd speaker arrangment in the door cards and down by the footwell? I haven't seen that in anything else.

Thanks Megatron, great summary. I think the 3.3 is the way to go too if you plan to use the car especially. The ebay one did look cheap. Red is not my favourite either but at that price i could stand it!

A turbo without air con, elec seats or windows and then id be in love....turbo s but not the money and a healthy 40kg saving!

These are the current rhd 3.3's for sale that I know of:

There are at least the same number, if not more, of lhd examples for sale at the moment. There was another lovely black lhd on ebay a week or so ago, apparently a 'pirelli photoshoot car' from germany, which had low miles. There's a cobalt blue left hander also out there on one of the independents - I forget the name, sorry.
