964 - wife's daily ?

I am kind of thinking out loud here.. [:)]

I am thinking of selling my 1967 2.0 and buying a 964 for my wife to use as her daily car ( her Audi A4 is well past its best)

I am thinking a C4 might be the sensible option as she needs to transport my 6 month old & 3.5 year old daughters around.

Would this be good car to use on a daily basis without costing a fortune to run?

Or is this a silly idea & should I keep the 67 run our '96 Audi A4 2.6 quattro into the ground?

Hi James,

If I was considering this option and your wife was to be the main driver may I suggest a tiptronic 964, I had one and they are very easy to drive especially if the car is used in mainly town driving but does also perform on the open road. The car itself is lovely and a classic Porsche, general servicing is around £400 and fuel economy is approx 22mpg on average. The tip also gives you cruise control (which I really miss now on my 993) and a digital readout in the rev counter(MPG,SPEED,OUTSIDE TEMP etc) There are lots of horror stories about leaks etc so get a good independent inspection along with a good service history. I would expect to pay around 17K+ for a good one and try to stay away from the C4 as they can be a problem, obviously you could go for the manual option but as you may already be aware the clutches can be heavy and awkward and prone to failure.

Don't worry about A/C as it never works properly on the early cars.[&:]

Hope this helps

Hi James

I agree with Pete. My wife drives a tiptronic and loves it. Ok we do live in London but it is the perfect solution. Whether C4 or C2 is not really an issue. Unless your wife likes driving on the limit she won't notice the difference. My wife drives a C2 tip.
Good luck.

My wife hates autos / tips etc.. + we live in North Yorkshire so have never heard of traffic jams unless its the A1 [:D]

The one thing we do have is very salty & slippery roads in poor condition usually with a good surface covering of mud too. I have trouble with grip in my Subaru forester and this was my reasoning behind a C4 --- for that day when she floored the throttle on a slippery corner.

I'll need to think this one through a bit further as I do love my little '67

James
Moira drives her car on a daily basis the only thing she hates is the D/heads trying to cut her up in there 100bhp cars trying to prove something, We will hopefully be at the feb meeting if you want to talk and test a 964 hopefully we will bring the 964

Back in the early '90s I had a 964 C2 Coupe (manual) and my wife had a 964 C2 Cab (Tiptronic), as our daily cars, (plus a Shohun for practicalities etc). As a comparison, my car was far better, but the tiptronic, which was new technology then, was very convenient. Never got on with the C4 though.

So, if you could find a really nice C2 Coupe tiptronic, it could be a lot of fun.

My wife drives both our cars as daily half drivers;both are manual in a mixture of rural, dual carriageway and short motorway runs plus shopping and has no problems other than the 964 side/rear mirror visibility areas when partly alongside other traffic,ie when joining/sliproads/motorways/traffic.Power steering on both, helps and is the main reason for choosing the 964 over the previous model.
The other day,she got stuck in 2 30min traffic jams and complained about her clutch foot but then she is a bit older than me.
By comparison,I can't get her to drive the Beemer yet which is auto/steptronic/sport mode.I get26mpg,wife 19! Costs 12k service every 2 years £400, insurance approx £450 2 named drivers limited miles but incl track days

A 964 C2 Manual would be 'my' choice [:D] Just need to decide if to sell the '67

Thanks for the info [:D]

Fordy, I won't be at the meet but I'm sure I'll catch up with you soon .

I use mine daily, C4 91.

It can be exensive, its Ok to just consider service cost and say thats not to bad - its milege dependant for a start so dont do the miles then the service will be lower.

In general i do around 16,000 miles per year. Service every 12k. In the last few months its cost me fair bit. Service and oil pipe replacement, wear and tear cost £950. New discs and brakes all round £650, new battery £100.

Insurance I got was a steel at £380 - quotemehappy.co.uk business miles inc.

I need tyres soon, I promised to lower it when the tyres where replaced, this will also need 4 wheel alignement est no change from a grand.

And thats without any big bangs etc.

But it is a lovely car to drive, kids fit in the back - only just! and I get a whole heap of enjoyment even if the last few months have been way out of my budget.

Across the past two years of ownership its been sort of OK but I wouldn't like to add up all the bills and tell the wife!

Even with the past few bits mine has been reliable and not so bad to run, I get 22mpg av and big grin factor.

Its a porsche thing, do it and worry about it later! You can always sell it if its too much (thats what i said when I got it and we are two years on - LOL)

Good luck

As per Doug dont be put off C4 they are just as reliable but obviously have a few extra areas for problems most of them just seem to be pretty minor and usually electrical gremlins around ABS lights and you will appreciate the C4 for your northern conditions.
I dont think your wife would be happy with the weight of the clutch, especially if you have any town driving and its not the most practable of cars for space especially with extras you need to carry around with small children ie most prams dont fit.
For your requirements a 968 would be more suitable as a daily driver for the wife and no problems fitting prams and shopping in.

If you really want a 964 I would suggest that you keep the quattro as a family car or get a small MPV and purchase the porsche on a 'classic policy'

Running costs inc tyres and excl. Insurance were less than £1000 pa for myself ave 7k pa for 3 years
