964 windscreen washers

lees

Looking for some guidance please. Passenger side windscreen washer works but drivers side has stopped. Is it a one way valve problem or a pump problem and how difficult is it to fix. Is it a DIY or garge job?
Thanks
Chris

Just checked the Streathers manual and pump replacement looks easy (there is a guide in the book).

Sounds like a blockage. I had a similar issue in an old car of mine (not a 964[;)]), I cleaned up the pump and filters which solved the problem.

I'm sure someone may know the system...

This sounds simliar-

if your pulling out the pump from the bottle be carful as the pipes are stuck like sh## to a blanket and you can brake the pipe of the pump very easy, take your time and just work through the system blowing it through.

Thanks guys, that's helpful. I'll dismantle and clean through and see what happens
Cheers

Had the same problem on my 3.2 after trying to clean the tee valves with no success I just changed the lot cost about £16 for the 4 valves in 2008
I did find one of the problems was the pick up in the water tank it has a filter on the end it was a bit blocked after 20 years
I think you have the same system on your 964, a bit of a sod to get apart
Just checked on the parts manual for the 964 and they are the same you will need 2off each No 914.628.433.00 & 477.955.481

Thanks for the advice. Think I'm going to have to put a day aside and work through it. Tried cleaning out the nozzles today with some wire and got some water through but by no means anything decent. I can see new parts on their way rather than messing with near 20 year old stuff.

Chris

Chris,
I had the same problem some weeks ago and asked the question on the forum.
I tried all the things you have tried, blowing down the pipes, using wire to clean the jets out etc. Nothing worked, so
I re piped the system from the jets back to the tee pieces on the original pipe work. I first established that the pump was OK.
I have done away with the secondary so called intensive washer system, I never used it anyway.
The washers work fine now, however there is a short delay before the water flows due to the route of the new silicone pipes.
I bought the new tee pieces from Halfrauds, just a couple of quid for the pair.
Good luck, this worked for me.

Thanks Ian. Apart from poking longish pieces of wire through the jet nozzles, which has got a dribble of water out, clearly I need to replace the tubing and other bits. Funnily the passenger side works really well. Is there anything special I need to know about accessing the tubing etc from the jets? I know how to reach the reservoir and pump up under the nearside wheel arch.
Regards
Chris

Chris,
after trying to clear the jets to no avail, I removed the pipes from the jet bodies and checked the flow from the pump. This was deemed as a good flow so first of all I repiped the near side jet using some small bore silicone pipe. This of course is very flexible and therefore easily kinks so long slow bends are the answer.
The near side jet worked fine, with a little bit of a delay in the water supply, due to the extended pipe run.
The off side jet still would not flow so using a tee piece from Halfrauds I simply teed into the near side pipe run.
This means making the original pipe work redundant but still insitu.
If you look under the off side jet, when you disconnect the original pipes you will see two pipes in and one out, one pipe is from the main bottle and one from the intensive system. All I did was bend the original pipe over and clamp it in the bent position, obviously to prevent leakage when the washers are used.
This makes the intensive washer system unusable however the washers are good from both sides of the car.
Not an ideal fix and a bit "Heath Robinson" I admit, but when I have time I will find out which of the original pipes is from the intensive system and slave it into the new pipe work.
I will sort this out properly when I have a new nearside wing fitted and can access the bottle with the wing off, but for now the car in legal.
It's a little tight working in this area but it's all possible.
Bear in mind there will be a delay when using the washers due to as I mentioned, the length of the pipe runs.
Hope this detail helps.
