964 Winter storage

Just put my C2 Cabriolet away for the Winter. What are the views about running the engine whilst in storage. Usually I run it for around ten minutes every month and so far it does not appear to have any ill effects. However looking online, there seems to be mixed comments, some saying that it can harm the engine others that it is okay. I have a heated garage and use a trickle charger so the car is stored in a pretty good environment.

Thank you David for the information very useful, do I take it then that you would not recommend running the engine during the Winter storage period??

The engine will be fine not running for a few months, I've had my 964 for 7 years, it's a summer car for me, I try to take it for a short run once per month providing there's no salt on roads, more to prevent the brakes from sticking than any other reason, I've had no problems with it regarding storage ... Except from flat battery, it's best to remove it if you're planning long term storage as immobilisers and alarms will drain the battery over a period of weeks.

When my Cup was in storage I took out the battery and put it on a trickle charger, pumped the tyres up and on start up wound the engine over with the electrics off to clear the oil that settles in the bores... That's all..

Agreed.

Or drive it on saltfree roads every 4 to 6 weeks.I keep the battery alive by charging it thru the cig lighter - Porsche offered these chargers ages ago - and make sure the car is stored in a dry and ventilated place.

I just bought a dehumidifier for our garage. Hoping this will keep the air nice and dry :)

As long as the garage is sealed up, yes. Expect to drag out a gallon of water per day......

Yes it is sealed, with a new insulated sectional door :) next, to introduce background heating to keep the chill off.

I store both my cars in my garage with an EBAC dehumidifier running on auto. It takes out a full tank of water every 2-3 days.

I have them both connected to their batteries with Ctek MSX 5.0 chargers connected that condition and trickle the batteries without overcharging them (worth the £55 you pay on eBay for them)

Also have the wheels in tyre dollies to stop them getting flat spots if they are sat in one position for a long time.

I use the same charger too. Those tyre dollies look fab! but... in my single garage i wouldn't get the car jacked on all sides to slip them into position. shame.
