964RS Strut Top Mounts - Monoballs always ?

As you may have read elsewhere, I have an ongoing query with the ride height of my car and the fact the the springs are too short to allow me to raise the car.

Now safely through the MOT, I do want to get it sorted, but Paul at Tuthills was just too busy to dedicate time to researching the correct Eibach spring combo - I have Eibach ERS main and tender springs.

So, I will probably pop along to Chris Franklin at Center Gravity and chat to him as he was recommended by Eibach themselves.

However, I have been offered an original (used) set of 964RS Green Bilsteins with black springs, but no monoball top mounts - from the US. About £800 including shipping and local VAT etc.

The rears are complete and fitted with original 'C2 'type' rubber top mounts (I have seen these modified on the web to fit OK).

The seller says you can run the RS fronts with standard camber plate top mounts - whereas I believed you must have monoballs.

Can anyone clarify if you can run RS struts and springs with the original C2 top mounts, or do you have to have monoballs. If so, does anyone have any used monoballs as they are £££ new from Porsche.

Many thanks

Ian,

Realising that the OEM RS monoballs are expensive, why not get some monoballs / camber plates from FVD or someone like that?

I fitted Bilstein PSS10 to my 964 track car along with RS style camber plates and monoballs. Work a treat and less expensive than OEM. There are plenty of other options out there as well. These look pretty tasty.....

How much wear / use have the struts you are buying got on them?

Chris will sort u out Ian. But as Ben is hinting at, you may need to get the Eibachs reconditioned anyway

Thanks Melv - I have emailed Chris and will get over there in the next week or so.

I have also asked about the mileage on the RS Bilsteins as you are correct that adding in a revalve would make them almost as costly as new ones.

With the costs of reconditioning and adding new top mounts, aren't you getting into the same spending territory as having KWV3 or PSS10 coilovers fitted?

Correct Porsche top mounts are £££ whereas the Rennline ones linked to above are more reasonable, but yes by the time you buy the bilstein RS setup and mounts you are at new KWV3 etc.

However, I would look for used or Rennline type mounts, but at the moment by preference is to see Chris and look at what he proposes - it isn't just a question of getting an inch longer ERS Eibach but he will know which main springs I should have - much cheaper for now.

Now, if I get around to building a track only car as discussed with Hugh and others, then I would probably buy Cup Car suspension !

Ian

p.s. see you ate Donington Historics on Saturday if you get there as well as the Sunday

If you're going that route, Tech9 also do their own adjustable top mounts. A bit more expensive than Rennline but at least they will be a bit easier to deal with if any issues crop up:

Quite fancy a set myself actually [;)]

I am not 100% certain on this but i recall the RS front struts have a larger diameter piston rod that is matched to the specific monoballs. Ironically KW make suspension kits for the RS mono balls (thats what i have on my RS. But afaik you can't buy non oem monoballs for the RS struts. If someone knows different then please post. I kept my RS suspension so i can always revert. No plans on that though. I love the KW / RS monos combi.
The 993 RS front struts and top mounts will fit. I think that's what Des has on his ?
