965 front tyre size

I've currently got SO2s in 235/40 R18Z on 8.5" RUF Speedlines but the tyre manufacturers claim the 225/40 18 N1 is the Porsche recommended tyre and my local fitter can't get any 235/40 tyres.

What is the standard rim size on a 965 with 225/40 tyres?

I'm going to change all 4 tyres and was thinking of either the Michelin Pilot Sports or the Pirelli Pzero Rossos. Any opinions?

Thanks.

Brian,

I've got 225/40x18 on my 8.5Jx18 Mille Miglia Wheels and 265/35x18 on the rear 10J wheels. I think 225's are the more popular size for the fronts.

I can't tell you what the standard size was on the Celebration model although I suspect Johannes or Richard Ling-Williams may chime in with that information.

Of course, I'm sure you realise that the Celebration model wasn't offered with 18" wheels anyway - that was reserved for the 3.6 Turbo which had the Speedline wheels which were 8J (front) and 10J (rear). The 3.8 RS had 9J/11J as standard.

Hope that helps.

See you tomorrow evening.

Best regards

Dave

Any opinions on ContiSportContact 2s?
It looks as though these are readily available N rated, but bizarrely the 235/40-18 appears more expensive than the same in 265/35-18.

"It was good to see how the 225/40s look on your 8.5 rims but I'm going to try to get replacement 235s. Remind me why it is better to go for the Porsche approved N range."

Brian,

I thought it might be better to reply inthe "Tyre" thread rather than the POTM thread.

I take your point about the 225 tyres on the 8.5J rim. As far as I can tell it IS a valid combination but the 235 does sit a little nicer on the rim.

Regarding the "N" rating bit, I'm not sure I can offer too much guidance. As far as "current" cars are concerned the situation is pretty starightforward in that Porsche go to the trouble of getting the tyre manufacturers to "tune" their tyres to the chassis in question. Whether it's necessary (or even desireable) to continue to buy "N"-rated tyres for older cars is very debateable. Obviously tyres which are on sale today are nothing like the tyres which WERE on sale when the older cars were current so why it would be desireable to fit tyres rated and tuned for, say, a 996 or 997 chassis to a 1993 964 escapes me. Ideally it would be best to fit 1993 spec tyres to a 1993 car but that is obviously out of the question. Simialrly, if you have non-standard wheel sizes (as I know you have) what difference would it make to have "N" rated tyres?? I have to admit, it beats me!!!

There are many people who will take the easy view that you should always fit "N" rated tyres - and there are some insurance companies who would take the same view - but I would be interested if we could get an authoratative view from Porsche GB or Porsche AG on the subject.

I sent RUF an email and Josef Waltenberger replied. They prefer the 225/40-18 on the front and they said that the SO-2 are a good tyre for my car or alternatively the Pzero Corsas which are 'special made for fast driving'.

But Adrian Streather's article on his trip to RUF and a drive in an RCT http://www.adrianstreather.com/docs/RUF%20ArticleR1.pdf says 235/40 (or even 245/40 on a Turbo look).
