968 advice

Hello All,

I am looking to replace my merc e-class with a smaller convertible as I don't do the motorway miles I used too.
I've got a 911 3.2 carrera for the weekends so I thought a 968 convertible would make a good stable mate.
I'm afraid I have to own up to knowing very little about the 968 and was wondering if anyone could give me some tips and what to look out for when looking around for a decent 968 convertible.
Also, will I get away with using one as an everday car? I presume I will as the 3.2 is almost an everyday car - just no power steering!!
Thanks in advance, cheers

You might want to ask the same question on the 944 forum, given the similarities between the cars.

Mark,

You will not go far wrong with a 968 cab as a daily driver, I should know as I just recently sold mine.

Re M030, this was never available for the cab as Porsche felt that the car would suffer from a deteriorated ride as it is not as stiff as the coupe. Saying that, if you have driven other cabs you will be impressed by the lack of scuttle shake in the body.

Don't be put off by tatty hoods, these can be replaced for about £700-800 and make an amazing difference to the look of the car. Another thing to bear in mind is that the chances of a cab being tracked hard would be rare.

Also go over to the 968UK.co.uk forum as you will also get plenty of advice and help there.

Good luck in your search.

Hi Mark,
possibly the mpst critical thing on a 968 is the Variocam system, after say about 75000 miles it would need checking for wear, there is a chain in there that needs checking regularly and unfortunately Porsche don't recognise it in the service schedule.
So an OPC would never check it unless you specifically ask, the real problem is that because they don't have any instructions about the chain or it's neighbouring parts, sliders, sprockets etc. they wouldn't know what to look for, so you may be better taking it to an independent that has lot's of experience on this engine, Hartech in Bolton are a good example. A few of us on 986uk.com have had the covers off the Variocam so we have some experience of it.

Cheers,
Stuart.
