hi there,

im looking at a few 968's now and I always ask about service history, last time service and current millage.

How long is acceptable for the car to without service ? for example, I have one that had a service in May 2006 ( almost a year ago ) at 99k and now the car is for sale with 110k....

Should the car have been serviced or is acceptable ? Other cars have similar situations.. more than a 1 year without servicing is a nono, I guess...

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The main issue to look at is the belts, these need replacement on age as well as miles. I would look back and see when these were last changed. Failure to do so could be the end of your engine and possibly car !!!!

The rest is upto you in how you wish to look after your car. I always like to replace the oil every 6k or year.. The rest of the service I reguard as a safety / up-coming issues list.

A service kit is only £65 from your OPC so why not have a go yourself.

the service interval is annual or 12K so strictly speaking no, the car youre looking at isnt overdue. however it is due now and you have to ask yourself about the vendor's motive. is he/she just trying to avoid servicing a car they intend to sell on anyway, or do they think a big bill might be due? you'd think they would sell to a dealer who would service the car anyway and avoid the hassle since, if you are smart, you will insist on a service before buying, or knock off a hefty wedge as a contingency

the only other things I would add are:

1) Camshafts/camchain & Variocam condition -- service record is not enough because these things are not part of normal service procedure and are thus the achilles heel of our engines. Buy a car with over 60k miles without inspection of the cams etc, then you might find yourself with a very nasty surprise.

2) I do not think there is a betteer recommendation that to have a pre-purchase inspection, which includes whipping the cam cover off to inspect the cams. eg stuff like noisy pinion bearings, plate lift on the brake calipers, exhaust on its way out can then be spotted and save you embarassment.
