968 brake & suspension upgrade

I am doing this for a friend. We are going to increase a bit 968 braking potential. original rear 4-pot Brembos will be reconditioned and front ones will be replaced by S4/951 S calipers. So, it's more or less converting brake system to 968 M030 system. Front calipers will be installed with 951 S spindles, so no adapters will be needed. Friend also bought used 968 M030 suspension, which we are going to overhaul as well. But first we are concenrating to the brakes

So far we have removed original calipers and overhaul has been started. Attachment springs are removed like guiding plates as well.

Starting point:

Front calipers have raised Porsche lettering which will be milled away. That's mainly because rear calipers have painted text, my friend would like to have a matching pair.

Quite dirty rear calipers

Almost disassembled, just have to pop out the pistons. Then we are ready for media blasting and new fresh red powder coat and painted Porsche text.

Disassembled calipers. Some pistons were stuck, but my good old reliable pressure air compressor did it's job again [:)]
Put all parts for overnight citric acid bath; now it's nicer to handle them.Cleaner calipers are also nice to media blast, when you don't have to use blasting material so much.

Calipers turned out nice

Most of these parts can be re-use after careful cleaning

Keep it coming Olli - great thread so far. I need to rebuild my calipers so I'm interested in the detail!

Caliper with raised Porsche text milled away. Slightly milled text looked great, just like it was new.But friend want's to have painted text, so it had to go. Now i have to install all protective coverings, so powder coat will go just to the places where it is needed.

I am starting next week restoring a set of 1986 951 calipers where also raised letters will be restored to original look.

Calipers are now at powder coater's. Front brake's (bigger calipers) crossover tubes were in bad shape, so i fabricated new tubes for them Started also another brake project, calipers are '86 951 ones

Thanks,

got calipers back from powder coaters. Now just have to assemble all the parts back. Mill Porsche texture clean of "italian job" calipers and paint Porsche script to 968 ones

Olli -- hi, two things

-- I think you are doing far too good a job on them, makes the rest of us look like under achievers!
-- Feel I need to ask you what you are cooking up for dinner tonight? all the work being done on your dining table got me in the mood for a meal round your place..............

Baked Caliper

Tried that with some powdercoated items....got into ALOT of trouble when she found out. Things to be cleaned only go into the dishwasher now when she is away for the day!

As Paul says, i think you should be banned, you really are putting us to shame. Well done though on a thorough job...i assume they are going into a cabinet in your living room [:D]

Hi Oli,

very nice pics!
What will you do with the old spindles? I am looking for cheap "standard" spindles for my Turbo Cabriolet where I plan on mounting 330x34mm discs and the 4 piston old GT3 Calipers with 140 mm hole distance.
I have just mailed a few places before I saw your thread :)
Let me know if you have spindles for sale.

Cheers

Niels

Be careful when putting back the crossover pipe. Friend fixed his customers calipers, where classic mistakes were made

Not a problem, just send calipers to me, have time available starting from next week. Have done these for several people outside Finland [:)]
