968 cab with a few issues

I'm looking at a 968 with a few issues.

The main one is the roof works manually but not on the switch and the car doesn't seem to have been serviced for about 20 k and 4 years.

The car though seems stright and basically rust free, am I mad thinking about it?

Is there anything else I should looking at?

You will definitely need belts and chains doing, a service, perhaps tyres and the hood sorting. You ought to budget £6k to £7k for the work unless you can do things yourself. Depends on how much the vendor is asking, and wether you are looking for a summer project !

Servicing aspects should not be too bad - a full service and belts change at a good indie will be about £650. The roof could be a major concern, as parts can be rare, expensive or no longer available - I think the bows along the sides of the roof are NLA! If it's just an electrical problem, I've seen the motors and cables on eBay recently, not cheap but at least available, plus I think a cab has been recently broken near Bexhill so Keith may have parts.

968's are basically good cars - I had a coupe for 12 1/2 years and have had my cab 2 1/2 years now. They are fully galvanised, so rust should not be a problem - but it's still worth checking inside the sills by removing the duct in the rear of the door shut and either insert a borescope type thing or do the mobile phone camera trick - but don't drop the phone! Also check the top corners of the windscreen - pull the seal back a little. Screen repairers sometimes damage the paint when cutting an old screen out, then hide the damage under the seal (ask me how I know....)

Porsche968uk forum is pretty active, there's a lot of useful knowledge there!!

I assumed it must be much like my old s2 cab problems wise , as the roof goes up and down manually I m thinking it electrical, I'm trying to decide if a 968 or a newer boxster s is better.

For years my special birthday present to me was going to be a Boxster - I even got close to ordering a new one. When the time came to scratch the cabriolet itch, even thought I'd twice had a 986 manual for a day as my courtesy car - and thoroughly enjoyed it both times - I decided a good 968 tip cab was the preferred choice. They're a much rarer car, and Boxsters start at such a low price now that it's far less of an enthusiasts car than it used to be. It also garners comments about hairdressers and menoporsche (whether justified or not!) which 968's do not!

Hi Colin your interest in a 968 cab reminds me of the advice I offer firstly have someone check out the underside corrosion is something you often find when its too late agree on the belts and general servicing needs personally would get professional inspection might save money in the long run Ken Coad 968 reg sec
