968 Caster mounts

Are the 968 caster mounts specific in their orientation? The ones I have, have a 2 small missing section of rubber on one side, does this face the engine or gearbox? Plus does anyone know the torque setting for putting this back on? I think the nut connecting to the wishbone is 85nm (?) but the manual I've been reading isn't clear and doesn't seem to mention then 2 bolts.

I cannot help on the other bits as I also plan to get 968 castor mounts before I get my car tracked/setup, but I can say that the rear control arm to body mounts are meant to be tightened to 46Nm according the 911&Porsche article available from the following website: http://www.cannell.co.uk/Road_tests/911PW0507_944_suspension_fix.pdf I am sad enough to have the earlier article detailing the problems that the ally arms faced and the billet alloy solution LOL.

I assume these are parts from the 968 added to repace the original rear wishbone mounts on the 944. I assume this increases caster to give stronger self centreing to the steering? How much are a pair of these?
 
I bought them from Hartech for about £35 + VAT each, Porsche wanted double that - I believe Hartech either have the parts made or actually make them. This part superseded the original part, I don't think it increases camber, but I'm not sure. There is considerably less rubber in them so the steering feel should be better

I see, just a way of tightening up the steering, I'd be interested in how much difference you feel with them fitted. Is there any need to re-align the suspension after fitting?
 
Here's a picture of the updated 968 mounts compared with the original rubbery ones. The old rubbery ones are discontinued now so you can only get the 968 ones and they do sharpen up the steering considerably and help to reduce tramlining if you fit 17" wheels. I believe the notch should point to the rear of the car, and you should get an alignment afterwards as you will have affected it.

Hartech bushes are not OEM Porsche bushes, the construction is slightly different. I have a set of the Hartech bushes for my 968 road car and Porsche 968 ones on the race car. They do improve the steering somewhat IMHE, in fact I would go so far as to say they are the most worthwhile upgrade you can do on a 944.
 
Well I seem to have put them both on backwards if thats the case [:mad:] Both my "missing" bits of rubber are pointing forwards. Not a big deal though, I still haven't found a definite torque spec for the bolts that hold it on though. I found something before that mentioned 46mn(can't remember where though), which sounds about right as I was able to undo them easily by hand, the nut to the arm at 85nm also sounds about right as I couldn't undo that one easily by hand [:D]
 
Alex. Just checked my Porsche manual and the torque for the castor mount bolts to the body is,,,,46Nm or [34ftlb]... The torque for the castor eccentric lock nut is,,,100Nm [ 73ftlb].. Hope that helps out..

Would you say that the OEM bushes are worth it over the Hartech bushes for a car to be used on the road? I know with some manufacturers (Ford and Peugeot) that it is seldom that aftermarket bushes last as long as the items you get from the dealers (usually a fraction of the time and abuse will kill them but I guess if you are paying £10 for a lower arm with BJs and bushes compared to £80...). I plan to get some ASAP for mine now most the suspension is almost tip top and plan to tie it into the engine change. :).

Aha, brilliant. I've got a little Porsche manual knocking about somewhere as well, I seem to have put it somewhere safe so i don't lose it though....

Just checked on my 968, as I couldn't remember where the notches/indentations are orientated on mine. There's notches both front and rear, on the OEM mounts, so like Pauly/Hartech say, it doesn't matter what way round they're installed. There's nothing in the 968 WSM about orientation of the caster mount either. So fit, don't worry and enjoy the new found precision! [8D]

I think the Hartech bushes come with a 2 year warranty and seem to remember them saying they supply Centre Gravity with them.
They look very similar to stock bushes, I asked them if they where the same and they said they are made by an OEM bush manufacturer to their spec (possibly / likely the same OEM bush manufacturer?). IMHO Hartech probably say this because they have to as they can't be seen to be supplying effectively the same bushings outside of the Porsche parts supply chain. The design is slightly different in that 968 bushes are only a few slithers of rubber whereas the Hartech bush is a continuous bit of rubber. Apart from that they look identical. I don't recall anyone complaining that they wear out quickly and Hartech have been supplying these bushes for some time now. Who knows ultimately but they are currently about 1/2 the price of 968 bushes from an OPC.

See what you mean Neil. The Hartech item actually looks superior to me...rubber all around should provide less flex. I've got powerflex black bushes in mine...sharpen up things even further...though there's always the monoballs which Elephant Racing/lindsey racing/etc sell, if you really feel like going overboard [;)]
