968 imobiliser problems

Hi Guys been out and about using the 968 over the Christmas hols visiting Brooklands and Bicester The 968 started playing up with immobiliser problems. The small fob which you insert in a slot adjacent to the ignition key was not connecting and the car would not start. After an embarassing half hour at Bicester RAF airfield I finally got contact and started the engine, immediately pressing on home. Since then it is not worked at all. Made contact with Hamilton and Palmer the original suppliers to Porsche UK and they knew instantly how to sort the problem, sent them my fob. they would supply two new replacements and the actual unit which fits near the steering column cost £160. Next when I get these items thru the post I am employing a mobile electrician to change over the unit etc and hopefully problem sorted. Anyone any comments or had similar experiences , not the best way to start the new year..But I do not lay the car up in the winter months although try and avoid salty roads Ken Coad

Sometimes we miss the obvious!

If you insert the transducer inaccurately the contacts between the transducer and socket don't mate correctly, and therefore you don't switch the ignition on. It must be carefully inserted, at a right angle in both planes, into the socket.

The answer (if it's the above) is to remove the transducer - count ten seconds - and then re-insert at a right angle as described above then you should hear the familiar three beeps.

The reason you have to wait for ten seconds is, like any elecrtonic componentry, it holds the power for a short time so you have to wait for it to decay first before re-trying.

The socket is normally the issue not the key.

I would get the socket replaced just a simple cut and solder job, the socket was about £40 I think.

For your 160 investment I think I would have replaced it with a modern unit
 
I occasionally over the years have inserted the little thingy and not got the normal beeps - pull the dohicky out, re-insert it and all is well. Happened with the coupe, and now with the cab, must be a 968 thing! I also occasionally find that the "normal" key plays up but the spare is OK.

Main problem I have with the cab (never with the coupe) is that if I leave the ignition key fully turned in the lock, things like windows and wipers do not work. Tweak the key back a smidgen and everything works. I understand this is due to wear on the back of the ignition switch probably caused by folk having too much weight on the ignition key - in other words, half a hundredweight of house keys on the car key ring!! Fixing it is about £80 of part plus installation - so I just test the windows after starting then tweak the key a touch!
 
Hi guys my immobiliser problem is not resolved. Bought the key way and two new fobs from Hamilton and Palmer employed a mobile electrician who removed the lower dash around the steering/ ignition and established 6 wires connected the imobiliser keyway and the replacement supplied has only four wires. Decision reassemble get correct replacement keyway fro H&P meanwhile tried using new fobs in old key way, problem still there a bit of fiddling and it worked once in 20 attempts. Bloody annoying, and yes am beginning to think a totally all new system in hindsight would have been the way to go rgds Ken Coad

I had a similar problem and a good blast of switch cleaner down the socket help emensly. I think they get full of fluff and rubbish from having your keys in your pocket then transfers to the socket.

when i checked out the price of the socket and keys I decieded to wait and have a CAT 1 system fitted and the H & P removed not done it yet.
