968 service

Evening gents, what would you expect to pay for a service with Cam belt change obviously with an independent ?

And is the cambelt the difference between the 12k and 24k service schedule ?

Thanks in advance

Is the belt different on the 968 to the 944 S2 engine?

944 is four years ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM, see the thread on the recently failed one if you think you can push your luck, or 40K miles maximum. I've not heard of 24K being significant?

I'd get to a good indy, explain the mileage and sort of driving you expect to do, and let them service it accordingly. The schedules in a new-car handbook are pretty irrelevant after 20 years as the cars are used very differently now, and mostly out of the dealer network where the wrong screenwash invalidates your warranty!

Hi Paul as far as I am aware cambelt is same as 944 s2

On that basis what would you expect to pay ?

Service and belts is menu stuff.
Have a bash around the usual indie websites and plenty will have a price for exactly that.

Looking at my indie's prices there is't a significant difference in S2/968 costs. I'd guess you have to go to someone you trust and have (or want to have) a long-term relationship with, and get their opinions?

Look at http://www.rpmtechnik.co.uk/ for where I get mine done, but menu-pricing is so difficult. If you need a belt, do you need a water pump, oil seals, chain etc as well? How long do you plan to keep the car, do you drive 1500 or 15000 miles each year, will you be running the car in to the ground or maintaining it religiously regardless of cost? Do you do any work yourself, would you trust basic work to a cheap "cash-in-hand" local mate? After all, they are only cars and any half-decent mechanic can work on them with any issues easily addressed by asking on the forums. Belt tensioning tools for the 944 are available to borrow from the Club and might be the same for a 968, if not let's buy one!

Thanks guys prices are as I thought / expected, I had in mind around £300 ish with belts

This will make you laugh I have just been quoted £700 plus vat !!! With an Indy, hence my post.

Paul, plan is to get the belt service done now and plugs etc so I know I'm good to start with and then more than likely do the annual service myself until the next belt service due

Poor 944 owners, have to get their belts done every 4 years / 48k miles. For 968's it was extended to 6 years / 60k miles - but then, our cars are getting a little long in the tooth, so many get it done sooner, especially as the consequences of failure are expensive! Belt change timing has been discussed many times on here and on porsche968uk. There are also oil seals only visible / accessible when the front is off for a belt change, so worth checking - likewise water pump.

At my local indie, routine service runs about £200 for 12k and £250 for 24k, then add about £300 for the belts/rollers.

If you're close to Kent, I'd suggeest checking another indie - like Project Nine in Marden!

There are some good Porsche centres out there,Leicester Porsche centre look at my 944s and older 911s for MOT and service, they have a great technician that specializes in older cars and owns a 964 himself after owning a 924 and a 944 before it( they are enthusiasts),they do a special older car labour rate and Discounted parts, they are friendly to all Porsche owners and I must be honest give an Independant type service but with main dealer trimmings, lots of older cars go there now, always an air-cooled 911 in there.
Older cars also have recalls done for free at Official centres these can be small checks or large ones with a big part fitted,it's all free aswell, yup FREE.
If you don't go you will never know(if there is a recall outstanding).

Specialists and Porsche Centres are both valid places to have your car serviced, finding an outfit that are diligent and fair is a whole other subject.

Find a garage that has more than a smattering of recommendations and, as mentioned above, strike a rapport with the right place/people and you'll enjoy owning your 968 even when things go pear-shaped.

I've used EMC in Birmingham and Porsche Centre Leicester, both extremely good with front-fours and early Pork - prices are keen at both establishments.

It's worthwhile getting a waterpump (not cheap) too whilst they have their oily hands in there!

Good luck [:)]

Hi Chris, funny enough they were my second choice and I mailed them yesterday, prices around what you say above so getting better

I shall get it done somewhere first time to include belts or for the belts more than anything and then do myself I think going forward.

Regards

Paul, an example of the service you get from Cliff at Project Nine. When he did the belts on my coupe last year, he phoned to get my email address so he could send me photos of what he found when he took the front off. He then spent time on the phone going through what the photos showed and why additional work was worthwhile while he had the front off. That's part of why he is my first choice!
