Hi all

My 93 tip 968 has been off road since December .When i tried to start it again everything seemed ok untill

i tried to select drive . I cannot select any gears the selector goes from back to front without selecting

any gear mode.It is possible that the gear lever feels slightly slacker than i remember. I have checked

relays and fuses.

Any sugestions will be gratefully recieved.

Many Thanks

John C.

Its part cable and part a load of micro switches for various positions. You can pull the leather knob off and remove the plastic cover bit from the centre console to have a look at the mechanism underneath. This may help to get a better idea of what is going on. Sometimes the micro switches break, in my case I had a weird issue once when the lever got jammed in a dead position between the gates, I had to dismantle half the mechanism to get the lever back into the normal range then put it all together again. Still can't understand how it happened as it seems impossible but nothing fails to surprise me with these cars.

Hi Neil.

Thanks for your reply,i had a feeling it might be something like that.Does the gear knob just pull off ?

Do i have to remove the push button on the top of the gear lever first?

If so do i just lever it out?

Sorry about all the questions.

Many Thanks John C.

John, how long did you have the engine running? I occasionally found that my tip was reluctant to engage a gear after a lay-up - longest one I gave mine was about 10 weeks! Invariably found that letting the engine run for a while then going into manual mode rather than the full auto gate persuaded the car to move, then it cleared itself and worked normally.

The operating mechanism under the cover is a selection of microswitches operated by the gear lever. Unscrew the centre button from the gear knob then pull the gear knob off - it may be reluctant to come if it's not been off for a while, so mind your fingers/nose/etc!! then carefully pry the plastic surround free - can't remember for sure, but IIRC you have to remove the ashtray and remove a couple of screws as well. You'll then see the plate with attached microswitches. The centre right one that tells the electrics you want manual mode has been a problem in the past, and they are now hard to come by - the little operating lever on the top breaks!

Did you leave the handbrake on while she was parked? That can cause a big bind and an almighty clunk when she first moves after a lay-up - the shoes get locked to the drum and take some persuasion to release!

Good luck mate - if you have problems with the selector plate/microswitches give me a shout, I may be able to help.

Hi Chris.

Thanks for your reply .The selector is not selecting .The gear selected indicator does not move, the red light stays on park. I am begining to think it might be a micro switch problem.
I will remove the cover tomorrow and take a look.

Many Thanks.

That's a bit of luck John - presumably quite a cheap and easy fix! Had it been the selector plate under the gear stick you could have been facing about £150 for the plate - if Porsche still have one available! I had a microswitch problem with my coupe about 2 1/2 years ago, which is how I know! I got lucky (so I thought) and found a plate on eBay USA, but when it arrived someone had already stolen the little roller ended operating lever which was all I actually needed, but through earlier posts on 968uk I was able to contact the original manufacturer and obtain replacement microswitches - but he only had a few of the manual select ones left at that time. As an interim fix, Cliff at Project Nine southern engineeered the operating lever from another of the microswitches until I obtained the correct part.

Hi Chris.

So far no cost just clicked joint back together .I guess i should replace it to be on the safe side.

I will try to get a price for replacement tomorrow.

Many thanks for your offer of help .

Best Wishes .
