968 track car

Hi A 968/ 944 can do most of what you're wanting. I'd suggest talking to Alex or Kevin (Alex can be easier to deal with) at EMC Motorsport in Birmingham, with respect to costs etc. They also often know of various examples.

After much deliberation, I have nailed down what I am after to a 944/968 or dare I say it a E36 M3 or Elise. Want something that is predictable in the wet but practical and capable of doing the odd trackday. Other car is a caterham so a "7 with a roof" is my ultimate aim. Questions are: How predictable is a 944/968 and is it able to steer it easily on the throttle? Is a 968 expensive to add cage, LSD etc to? For instance, taking a standard Sport at about £9k, am I looking at a fair bit more to turn it into a more focused track car?

Aims are to have somehting with excellent feel and drivabilty rather than outright speed. Any thoughts or anyone know of a car I could be interested in?

I would suggest that you look around for one already converted to your needs ....... it just does not make financial sense taking a clean std car and adding all those bits in. Much cheaper this way ............ how about this one for starters at RPM who hosted the 968 gathering last Saturday http://www.rpmtechnik.co.uk/sales/stock-list/944-club-sport-rpms-very-own/ ........ as for the handling a 944/968 with it's rear gearbox and 50/50 weight distribution has legendary handling and has kept me on the black stuff in 4 years of racing !

....... well all the work is done to a high spec - no DIY botch up there, just get in and drive it. Fair value I would say. ......... or have a look at this one being sold by Ben Demetriou ....... now that is getting into bargain territory http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/motorsport/race-cars/tin-tops/porsche-944-s2-race-car-trackday-car-for-sale/855623 Stripped out and with a full cage 944's turn the scales around 1100kg ...... then if you have time and deep pockets you can nibble away at the next 100kg, with more lightweight panels, plastic rear hatch glass, headlight delete, heater delete etc etc. NB My 968 racecars weigh about 1125kg ....... the PCGB Regs dont allow us to go lighter even if we wanted to. ......... you'd be right in thinking that 944/968's are actually quite heavy cars to go tracking in, so the power-to-weight ratios are quite low compared to the more powerful caterlise's around ...........

RPM are currently in the middle of converting a client's 968 into a track car, with the owner doing some of the work himself to keep costs down.

EMC have got a couple of cars for sale at the moment too... That 944 looks like a bargain given the first hand knowledge I have in converting both a 944 and 968 to track and race spec. Improvements go in easy chunks of a £1k LSD = £1k Cage = £1k Big brakes = £1k Seats+belts = £1k Tyres = £1k See where I'm going with this.....

Lali, that's cruel - Paul has his orange 968 race car for sale, it would be rotten for him to be second to an EMC car again!![;)][;)]

One of the EMC cars for sale is mine ;) But I think I'm safe I'm saying that the orange car and my blue one are going to be more than the OP wants to spend!!

Tot up the 9k he started at, then the 1k per bite upgrades - before long you're not too far away from the asking price for the sorted race cars - and one that only just finished second this year is obviously pretty well sorted! Don't know the spec on yours, but it must be a consideration to spend the money up front on a sorted car rather than starting low and spending loads of cash on required upgrades!

mines like Pauls... ...only bluer... and faster!! [;)][;)][;)] The only reason you'd go the DIY route was if you were really competent in doing stuff or have a perverse control freak nature...

This why we like to call them motorsport units, somehow stripping off the pound sign and the thousands bit makes it sound less scary and its always multiples of £K anyway. [:D]

I know which I would rather take on a wet trackday though.... As Blur said "they go round and round, and round and round"

Thanks all - after much deliberation, driving and even more thinking, I think I have settled on a car. It seems quite good and once i have got the inspection results, I will make a final offer on it and bring it home. And yep, I have gone for an Elise. Driving the 944/968 was good but (and in no way a criticism), they seemed to lack the element of madness I am after. Very smooth, plenty of torque, no doubt brilliantly reliable but to be honest I could not get the Elise's steering quality out of my head. I may return in a couple of years but for now, I think my decision is made. I think!!

It did seem a bit odd putting a 944/968/M3 in the same decision making process with an Elise, 2 very different categories of car and trying to get close to the Caterham with a roof experience as possible the Elise would have been the immediate choice really. Did you consider the VX220?

I guess the Elise doesn't have power steering? Can't see why it would be so light weight. I found with my race car that ditching the power steering brings the whole thing alive in a way which is hard to convey.

I only have experience of the S1 Elise,it had amazing steering sensation, light and so communicative, they don't use brakes or tyres either as they are so light, you can chuck it into a bend at a hell of a lick in standard road guise. No grunt in the S1 and I always had to take tissues with me for when the roof leaked in a downpour.I liked it but I only kept it for 6 months. Hope you enjoy yours[:)]

here comes a blatant plug .......... my orange 968 racecar remains for sale, anyone interested? Would suit a novice in Class 2 or a more experienced driver in Class 1. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/motorsport/race-cars/tin-tops/front-running-porsche-968-race-car/831454

I have to admit that when I do move on from the 944 I will likely buy myself a 111R S2 elise. Just feel like a change and would want something that doesn't have to be trailered around etc. and is good enough straight out of the box.
