Hi All,
I have a 94 cabriolet with 17" Cup 2 alloys can anyone recommend a good choice of tyres for this.
Don't really do track so something good for the road and good handling??
Thanks
George

PS Happy New year to one and all.

I am using GT-Radial Champiro HPY they are great value for money think the set came in at 300 fitted

they are quiet and have good grip in both wet and dry, I was so pleased with them I put a set on my A4 Quattro and so far they have been just as good as the Pirelli P7 that came off

255 40 17
225 45 17

got them from tyre leader

I looked at the tyres Waylander recommended when I needed new 17" tyres for my MB estate, but opted instead for Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics, also from Tyreleader. Slightly more expensive, but EU rating AAB. We're so impressed with them, noticably how quiet they are, that I tried for them for the rear of the 968 cab in early September but could not get them in 16's so opted for Goodyear Efficientgrips (again from Tyreleader), which are also very good and did a splenndid job on our 2600 mile trip to Northern Spain and France.

I've got Michelin PS2's on my 944, excellent in the dry. Continental Contisports on my A4 quattro, excellent in the wet.

Happy New Year to you too.

The first thing to ensure is that they are 'N' rated (don't use any other rating). I've been very pleased with Bridgestone SO2's. Relatively quiet, good grip, wet or dry, and don't wear too quickly. You are likely to get the best price from Blackcircles on line. You pay for the discounted tyres and fitting in one go and you choose a local accredited fitter. Have a look at their website.

All the best, Peter

Not sure I agree with Peter F F about N rated - in 17 years of 968 ownership and a number of tyre changes I've not specifically looked for N rated tyres. My coupe was originally fitted with Yokohamas from the factory, the first owner replaced the rears with identical tyres when it failed its first MoT on worn tyres, then later did the same with the fronts as he'd struggled to find the rears. The Yokos gave good grip but did not last. I initially put Contis on the rears, but they also did not last, so I ended up fitting Bridgestones all round which were fine (can't remember the exact models). I recently had to replace the rears on my cab, wanted to get Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics which I'd fitted to my MB, but could not get them in the size I needed so, as above, went for Goodyear Efficientgrip (225/50 R16 IIRC) and am really happy with them.

having N rated tyres is just a way of giving the tyre companies more money for basically nothing,

the tyre construction will be exactly the same as all the others, as long as they meet speed and load specs its fine

I put 4 N rated PS2's on, there wasn't much difference in price when I bought them. Buying from an online supplier I wanted to know all 4 were the same compound. Check the manufacture date too.

Thanks for all the help. I will look at all the suggestions.
Anyone know anything about Vredsteins? Another forum rated them very highly?

Engine coming out early next month for all the bottom half seals and gaskets to be replaced. Anything else I should do whilst out?
90k on the car.

Looking forward to some runs with you guys this year.

George, check out the Porsche recommended tyres for the older models ("Classic"?) and you'll find Vredesteins tested and approved for winter use on the car models listed. Can't remember where the link is on the forum, possibly in the 993 section, but a search should turn it up. I acquired a set of Boxster wheels with almost new Vredestein winters a year ago for the 993 and they were excellent, as long as you weren't too enthusiastic with the loud pedal in falling snow........ Not fitted this winter as the 993 is being rested so I'm trying to figure out a way to use them on the Yeti! Sadly I think 5 x 130 is a bit big and I suspect there would be clearance problems, particularly on the rear - lol.

Incidentally I had Bridgestone SO2's on the CS and was extremely pleased with them in all conditions including on a soaking wet Knockhill. BTW I found Tyre Shopper consistently better value than Black circles, they used my local National tyre depot in Paisley for fitting and were based in Milngavie! www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/Online-Tyres

I'm no longer up-to-date with 968 matters but I'd be checking the camshaft chain very carefully and the belts, assuming you weren't going to change them anyway. Have a look at the Hartech site as I think Barry Hart reckons the head gasket is past its sell-by date by now and describes all sorts of horrors which happen when it starts to deteriorate.

Thanks Richard for the tips.
One more thing is there anyone in the Paisley?Greenock?Glasgow you can recommend for 4 wheel alignment?
Thanks
George

Take it to Kenny Brown in Hillington and he'll get it all pointing the right way for you. He set up my 44 turbo a while back. Pleased.

HI Guys a couple of comments re tyres and 968's I started with Continental's and didn't rate them in the wet, then I changed to Bridgestone SO"'s good tyres but transmitted a lot of road noise, now I am on Michelin Pilot Sport and reckon they are superior in every way. of interest use Vedestrien as wets on my track day car and for the money they work quite well. Finally recommend Promax chip it suits the car and enhances the performance, use high octane petrol to get the best performance.. rgds Ken Coad

+1 for the Promax, sourced from K300. Had a standard chip on my coupe, found out (when I had the Promax fitted) that my cab had a Superchip in place of the standard, the Promax is the best of the 3!
