968cs sun roof fitting

Last year I bought a 968cs and joined the PCGB, really pleased with the car, and recently had a great day at Goodwood with the Club,
However last night being warm and sunny, as though Summer has finally arrived, decided to remove the roof, rather than just opening it, and take my wife for a spin.
All was well until I tried to fit the roof back in position, I followed the instructions in the hand book, but it doesn't seem to sit far enough forward on the front supports/clips so that the two rear motorised metal retaining pull down clamps are not fitting into the channels, obviously I don't want to force anything, as I'm sure it is me at fault and am not positioning it correctly.

Can anyone advise, I'm sure others have been in this embarrassing situation.

Many Thanks

can take a little shove to get it to go right in, make sure the locks at the front are undone before you slide it over the wind deflector.

if you leave the rear arms right down you should be able to just drop the roof in the hole if all is slotted home correctly,

the arms have to be in the remove position to get the roof back in the hole

Many Thanks

It just needed the confidence to give it a good shove, I treat her like the lady she is, but your reply gave me the confidence.

Thanks again

I always held the panel vertical to re-install it - best done with 1 person each side, to avoid chance of breaking something. As above, it can take a little shove to get it completely into position, but from vertical I found it normally went on OK. Then lower it into the roof and re-engage the operating arms.

A word of warning about operating the sunroof. Over time the clutch on the motor can overtighten, resulting in stripped plastic gears in the roof. When operating the switch, look over your shoulder at the operating arms and learn when to take finger off switch rather than depending on the clutch - you'll save yourself the grief of replacing the plastic gears!

Clarkes online has a big "how to" about replcing the gears, but it has one glaring error. It starts by releasing the roof lining from the back of the sunroof opening. This is not necessary. Instead, remove the plastic trim across the middle of the roof (over the gearboxes) and, with a sharp craft knift, cut the roof lining round the gearboxes. You can then get at the necessary screws - and it's all hidden when you put the plastic trim back in place! Far easier than attempting to get the roof lining correctly back under the sunroof seal (ask me how I know!!).
