'98 2.5 engine problem

Hi guys. Just want to know if anyone has had any trouble with the engine not revving up all the way to the red line? I was driving home just after collecting my sisters Boxster from a service and it felt quite sluggish above 4000 rpm. I tried to rev it all the way up in second and it really starts to hesitate above 5500rpm and just wouldn't go to the red line. I takes a good while to get above 5000rpm. It will rev up all the way to the red line no problem when the car is in neutral. Just wondering if it could be the fuel pump. Filter has been changed. Or is it the computer?
Thanks, Alex.

Might be the variocam if it struggling above 5500rpm, but at lower revs MAF more likely.

Is it misfiring at all ? - misfires in damp weather migth indicate the breakdown of the coil packs - one per sparkplug

This will be the MAF, not a massive expence and easy to change yourself, Europarts sell at £175 inclusive (VAT and delivery)
Quite usuall when a MAF fails to also have erratic idle, occassional cut out when comming to a stop, hesitation during acceleration.
All you need to do the job is a tamperproof torx screwdriver (not sure what size it is) undo two screws and pull off the electrical connection - job done in minutes after accessing the engine compartment.

Left hand side of engine right next to the air filter, about 2" away towards back of air cleaner, oval shape, two screws, fits into the trunking betwwen air filter and throttle body.

if you were just coming back from having the car serviced take it back to them and ask them to check it. Seems likely that they have left something unplugged etc

Thats really great guys. John thanks for the link. Looks easy enough.
Laurence, the car has been like that for a good while now according to Emma (its owner). She never drives it hard and it's been months since I drove it. However I have a feeling there was always a problem and it's just getting worse. (comparing it to my old Z3 and now e36 M3 which charge to the rev limiter) Hopefully cleaning the MAF will sort it out or else it'll go back the the dealers for a checkup. Needs front droplinks as well [>:].
Cheers, Alex.
