The engine has to come out of my car as it is making a really awful knocking noise - we think its a problem with the crank. While its away being sorted are there any other jobs we should be doing? We will be looking at the gearbox and clutch of course. Any advice on what we need to check/replace please? Thanks & regards. Zeusy.

Sorry about the engine. Here is a link to a good video showing what's involved in the replacement of the IMS bearing and why you should do it when changing the clutch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dndanlFmcW8
A problem with the crank?
Which garage told you that?

Tiptronic gearboxes are very difficult to remove in situ, so just easier to remove entire power unit.
As a starter, I would replace AOS and oil filler pipe when the engine is out. Both a pain to do with engine in.
Your engine builder should advise you of the best upgrades to do whilst engine is out.
Get a smoke test on the inlet pipework to see if you have any leaking pipes which can be replaced. Generally, look at all the pipework on the top of the engine and replace if it looks old/brittle.
Give starter motor a good lube!
Good luck.

We are not entirely certain what the issue is except that it is a serious one. The previous owner seemed to think that it could be a problem with the crankshaft. It will be going in to Hartech for investigation and hopefully a fix but I am expecting them to find that it has major damage and is beyond economic repair. Mine is a manual 2 wheel drive car. I will post our findings in due course. In the meantime I am on the lookout for another engine just in case we need one. Thanks & regards. Zeusy.
It won't be the crank. Is it using much oil or is there oil in the cool expansion tank? Hartech for sure are the people to go to
Re - 996 3.4 engines. I have had no luck finding a replacement motor so far. I am now looking for another as I am fairly certain the one I have will be found to be u/s when we eventually get it out and stripped down. This is now scheduled for the end of November at Hartech. If anyone has a suitable motor lying around or if they know of someone with one for sale - even if it is a broken non runner - please get in touch. Yes ........ I know there is a 'good' one currently for sale on e-bay in Leeds but having contacted the sellers I don't think they are entirely cosher (....... they are probably a fine body of people but I didn't like their payment terms or their syntax). Most marque breakers all seem to want my engine plus a hefty wad of cash so I am not really interested in buying one from them. I would much prefer to source one through the club if at all possible. The search continues. Thanks & regards. Zeusy.
You could try contacting some Indies. They may have or know a car with history that is suitable. Until the present block is stripped down you could find it's repairable with a short block/liners or head(s). Normally cost of labor makes it prohibitive. I can ask at Northways later in the week.
Good luck and keep us posted with pics if possible.

There's a couple on eBay just now but as you say they want big money including your engine, I contacted lodge racing regarding there engine at £4500 as I think it will cost double that to rebuild mine.
I had a bid on the one you mention above but as soon as the seller contacted me I knew something wasn't right.
Like yourself, my search continues.

I had a chat with Ray and unfortunately has nothing at the present time. Keep up your search and sure something will be available soon.Zeusy said:Hello Wibble. Thanks for the response. I have put a few feelers out and hopefully we will turn one up. If you could ask Northways for me that would be most helpful. When Hartech pull mine down I will post a report on here along with a few pics. Best regards. Zeusy.
