98 boxster buy!

Hi all. Can you guys tell me anything i dont know about looking for on buying a boxster? i've seen a 98R Arena Red boxster, local to me in very nice body condition, cream leather, non climate control, its up for £9000 with full porsche service history and done 89,000mls RHD. Many thanks.

Well i have a business in the Northwest (Buckshot9's) that takes care of a few Porsches and other cars as well, i also sell porsche parts and i'm a member of the good garage scheme, i know a good bit about all cars but need to know what the owners of them have had problems with. Not just the big problems like the RMS or gearbox, clutch lasting 50,000ish, liners, ect. but even the smaller things i need to look out for. This will be the first boxster i've owned, I've 924s, 944s but no rear mounted motors yet other than italian ones. thanks again.

Sounds like you know one of the car to the other, the big issues are RMS, slipped cylinder liners etc.
Gearboxes are largely reliable as there are few reports of any, never mind significant problems!
Coolant expansion tanks go brittle and split, typically every 4-5 years.
Check the front rads and the air con rad situated in front for signs of corrosion - road debris gets in through the vents, accumulates between the rads and corrodes them.
Alloys are prone to corrosion too, but can be repainted fairly cheaply nowadays.
Door membranes can fail and lead to water ingress, easily spotted by damp carpets at the base of the door panel - easy and cheap fix

Make sure everything works, and that the rear plastic screen is still supple, not too foggy with scratches and general wear, and that the roof operates smoothly.

Not sure about the cream leather - Porsche offered what i would describe as light tan / caramel colour, but certainly nothing like cream - may have been reupholstered ?

Arena red not the most popular colour, but at that price you can't really go wrong

I don't want to rain on your parade but I wouldn't get one without aircon (harder to resell, although no doubt someone will be along shortly to say 'Put the roof down!' Well, trying doing that in the middle of a traffic jam in blazing sunshine and 90% humidity, or when you want to demist the car quickly in winter. End of rant) or that colour (I like it, but again a hard resell) or with that colour leather (hard to keep clean).

Right, now I've got my unsolicited opinions out of the way, the things that have gone wrong with mine include:
1. variocam solenoid problem (both banks but only one in my ownership -- a £400 sort)
2. leaking doors -- £50ish for the membrane
3. cracked coils --- £25 a cylinder
4. the discs tend to corrode badly if you don't dry the discs off after washing
5. ignition switch fails -- a £35 part from Audi to fix
6. aircon condensers and lines corroded (not a problem you will have with this one)
7. spoiler a bit sticky -- WD40 holding this off at the moment but I think it's going
8. plastic window cracking -- a new glass screen top for £750 is in my future
I've had mine about four years now I think, 62000 miles iirc, 97 model. Been quite a good reliable car despite the above. Have got a hardtop for it and put in a rear parcel shelf and speakers and a heated rearscreen switch. 996 console, OBC and cruise in the future.

Other things I've seen on the forums are oxygen sensors packing up (£50? a pop), mass air sensors needing replaced (£165?), expansion tanks leaking, etc. Worst is when engines blow up. I would say that 2.5s don't seem to be too bad for this but I know I'd get in mine and then hear a bag of spanners get blown out the exhaust. Oh well, a chance to put a 3.4 in it...

What options are on the boot sticker. Any photos?

Dont mind not having AC, when i can have the roof off. I've got a alfa 156 with AC but turn it off and put the windows down. I Love arena red, its the colour i've been after, i had a 944 in a not to far from colour, ok it was more brown but looked great. Your right it is a tan leather and not cream. I'll get pics on in next few days, ive took pics but not checked car over yet.

The console box lid tends to break off as well (weak hinges) but there is a repair kit.
The horns pack up too as they are quite low down in the front.
Look forward to the pics, Arena and Savannah (sounds like it) is a good combo imho.

Sorry not got pics yet, not got my cam set up on this pc yet, and i keep on leaving it at work, but its just like that pic but with normal wheels on it.
