98 boxster paint issue

Guest

New member
Hi,

I am a new member with a 98 2.5 Boxster. I have a rust blister underneath the lock catch drivers side. I think this is rust from the inside out. Before i tackle my local OPC has any body had this problem and what was the outcome?. I have heard that later cars have gasket under the catch.

PS any one else got an Ocean Jade Boxster? Haven't seen that many on the road.

Welcome Dave - I see you got in to the site after all [:)]

You already have my input, but I too would like to know our members experiences with getting this sorted out by the OPC:
  • Has it been fixed for free? If so up to how old?
  • Did any cover it under the paintwork warranty?
  • Has anyone had the gasket fitted without asking to have it done?
  • If you've had to pay, what excuse did they give for not doing it free? This was a design error after all...

Please note: Later cars are all fitted with the gasket as standard (the gasket protects the paintwork from being damaged by the door catch digging in). I think only cars up to about '98 were affected - if you have a later one that did not have the gasket please correct me!

Dave,

I guess Mark has already told you, it's a common problem for early cars, and should be covered by Porsche's 10 year 'Long-Life Guarantee'. But they generally don't pay out to get it fixed, and especially not for a car as relativley old as yours. To retain this guarantee the car will have needed a status report 2 years after delivery of the car from new, which must be repeated yearly (FOC).It's all outlined in your Guarantee and Maintenance handbook. So that's one of their get-out clauses, of which they have many more of which I've heard. Don't hold your breath.

P.s, I have an Arena Red boxster, and they are also very rare, only seen 2 others so far in 3 years!

Good luck

The RMS is also a design fault! £833 is the 'estimate' I had from OPC Swindon to replace it.

Er.. Yeah, I know John [;)]

£833 - for the RMS or the Catch fix (your's hasn't had the problem with the catch has it???)

No My post was almost grammatically correct (JCB..) [:)]

Arena Red and Ocean Jade are both examples of the "fringe" colours that cycle in and out of the options every few years. Once they become a special colour it's an extra 2 or 3 grand to have your car that colour.

Surprising really, as In the States, I read a poll showing that Arena red was second in popularity to Silver (with blue coming third). Do they charge different rates for paint depending on the specific country's demand for them?

Hi,

Thanks for all your replies. My car did have the 2 yearly inspection, it has been serviced by OPC since but nothing has been put in the Body Inspection since the 2 year check. Should they check the body condition as a matter of course or would it be up to the individual to make them check it!. Any members work for any OPC's or would that be a conflict of interest!

I'm not too sure what was available in the past but the USA colors are the same as the UK colours for the current model with special colors being $3070. Arena Red not listed for this year.

Rodney, Nic Doczi once told me that Arena Red was a colour for the mature driver. That's not verbatim I'm being PC. [;)]

It was definately Nic that said it.

Such a stirrer John!! [:D].
I've heard someone else on this forum liken it to 'Old men's socks'!!
Bah humbug to the lot of them, it took me 6 months to find the colour combo I wanted, soon there will be an anti-silver/blue/black revolution, and I will be there at the front, stroking my furry white cat, with a demonic laugh!
