981 Boxster to 718 Boxster

Collected my Boxster 718 from Porsche Silverstone on Friday to replace my 981. So far mainly motorway miles on the way back to Leeds, but impressed with cars handling and sound with the PSE fitted (even if it isn't a flat 6). Looking forward to taking it out on some country roads this weekend for the R7 Sunday Service.

Glad you're enjoying the new car. I am thinking of changing from a 981 Cayman to a 718 Cayman S and would be interested in what you think.
I have my doubts about the sound and losing two cylinders but I know that's the way forward.

Nice looking car
i would think the 981 to a 718S will seem very rapid!!
From my 981S to a 718S felt a fair bit quicker ( due to more torque I expect) so a 981 to the new S would be something :)
enjoy

Looks very shiny Matt, is that GT Silver Metallic?
Hope to see it in the flesh at a future event.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it, I actually bought my 718 as I think they sound better and more aggressive... get your OPC to lend you one for a few days as you really need to experience how more usable it is to appreciate the difference. I love mine, and every conversation I've had with random members of the public have been about how good it sounds or the colour.....

Thanks for all the comments

Carnaby - Fingers crossed it improves
TJB - Yes its GT silver, should be out on Sunday
Ray - I will let you know when I have taken it a proper drive
Dyllan - I just went for the 718, seems as quick as the 981S
Pthornley - agree totally, its a more 'grunty' noise but sounds really good

Interesting to read these reports of the 718. Following previous ownership's of 4 wonderful Boxsters with the flat six and then short ownership of a couple of 991.2's the last being a 991.2 Targa S, I must say that even after only 250 miles, I am not sure that my new 718 Boxster will be a keeper. I am pleased with the positive handling and the performance for a 2.0L is very strong, but it does not really compare to the sound and smoothness of the 981 and feel that the low speed 'put - put' sound of the flat 4 is very disappointing.

However, I did see this post on another forum regarding the Soundaktor device which is to create a false noise in the cockpit.:-

The Soundaktor, is a system that takes information from the engine management system such as revs, torque, throttle angle etc, and sends this to a device which assesses it and activates a resonator which is attached to the rear bulkhead. It's supposed to make the car sound 'sporty'. Deactivating it removes a lot of the 'drone' noise and appears to make the cabin much quieter. The good news is that it takes moments to deactivate, is easily reversible, and does not throw up any fault codes. To deactivate it is simply a matter of pulling a 7.5amp fuse located in the fuse box behind the R/H boot floor side carpet and the process takes only a few seconds.

After removing the fuse, I think it is a slightly better noise in the cockpit and at least it was worth a try.

PS - Anyone in the UK got a low mileage Black 2016 981GTS with PDK ?? :)

David,

The Soundaktor is a very crude device employed by VAG on many of its vehicles to enhance engine noise in the cabin, something which is becoming more widely used as vehicles become more refined and exterior noise regulations become more stringent, causing manufacturers to seek to inject more excitement into the interior soundscape.

JLR have been very successful in adding noise to the car's audio system (BMW less so), demonstrating that - correctly implemented - this is a far superior way of tailoring the sound in the cabin to be compatible with the type of vehicle: powerful, sporty, refined, etc. It's a pity that Porsche haven't chosen this route...yet!
