981 Cayman DAB Aerial Location

Hi,

I have purchased the Dension DAB+U unit for my 981 to add DAB to the car, this seems the best integrated solution without a headunit change or costly PCM upgrade.

I need to place the stick on DAB aerial somewhere on the glass, however it has to be close to a painted metal surface for the grounding strip.

My initial thought is the rear passenger quarter window, how hard is it to remove the trim under the window? Or is there a better/more discreet place to place it?

Many Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike.

Removing the plastic panels are relatively straight forward. The one that wraps around the seatbelt guide pulls out with a bit of help from a trim tool. (A set of these from EBay or similar is a useful addition to the toolbox on these cars)

However the trim that includes the cubby box is bolted in, but can unbolted when the surrounding bits have come out.

I need educating on things audio - I thought these cars had a DAB aerial. Please let us have an update when you find out what works.

Thanks for the reply, good to know I can just remove the trims. I'll try this with a trim tool at the weekend.

I am not sure on the stock DAB aerial, I presume this is only for use by the PCM where supported?

I've gone for the Dension system as it can be installed and removed relatively easily and doesn't require removal of the dashboard/PCM which is something I am not comfortable doing.

I'll update once done! :)

Isn't the aerial in the windscreen on the 981, I assume it's the same for all cars no matter if they've specced DAB or not?

If there is a way for me to easily connect in to the car's aerial that would be great, I'm struggling to find information online though

A little update now I have installed DAB.

The unit I bought was the Dension DAB+U from here - http://shop.dension.com/en/dab-u-usb-receiver-with-antenna

This unit pretends to be a USB thumb drive with tracks on essentially, it displays each station as a track and when you select one it buffers for about 15s and then starts playing it.

I had a lot of problems with stability, but having talked to support I loaded configuration K188 and this seems reliable.

I received about 20 stations with the aerial on the passenger seat, with the aerial installed in the window I get nearly 80 now. I need to take it on a drive to test out how well it keeps signal but it looks good. My area has always had good coverage of DAB though.

Onto the pics and install, I fixed the aerial to the rear passenger side window and ran the cables under the door seal into the various trims. This goes in to the glovebox where the Dension unit lives plugged in to the USB port.

The trim just pops off above the seatbelt, it pops off upwards and as mentioned trim tools are useful here.

Browsing tracks feels very OEM

As does the display for it
