981 Cayman S oil temperature

Hi Folks

981 'S' currently with c2,500 miles on the clock: I've noticed that the oil temperature on a 75-80 mph M-way cruise is in the late 90s and I have seen 106 degC shown. Is this normal/OK? Other 981 owners, what do see? 987 owners too?

In my 997 Gen II the needle used to sit nicely at 90 with the occasional 95.

Would appreciate your thoughts.
 
987's don't have a temp indication on the oil, only the coolant. But for there to be a difference between the 997 and 981 as great as that I'd suggest that you have it checked out, the OPC should be able to put a thermocouple onto the engine to prove if your reading is correct or not, how is the water temp?
 
Nick, Are you a Renntech contributor and able to tell us what the 981 Boxster SIT says as the normal range?

Thanks for responding, guys. I think water temp is OK - though it's the oil that I tend to focus on. Next time I use it I'll check. In fact, that sounds a god excuse to go for a drive... [:)]

There are some knowledgeable types on here Maxym, but none of them are gods!
 
Hi, Mine does the same as yours. I have seen 112 in traffic. I notice you didn't say you had tried to find out from your OPC about this, I assume they could not help? I have found it virtually impossible to get any answers from the factory or OPC on any 981 questions. I suppose it's possible the oil runs hotter vs the 997 and 987 but more likely the sensor is located in a different location. Good luck, I hope you have more success than I did. Chris
 
On a philosophical point, would we be happier with just warning lights with binary "not lit = don't worry" and "lit = panic" More data = more to worry about?

In my experience this is normal. If you want to lock it down try running it in the sport mode(normal driving) and see what happens. It's part of the thermal management system in the newer models. 981 Boxster S, +1yr, 9k miles. FBR try this for an insight into it's operation:

Peter, If you've the time or inclination, you may want to take a look at this link: http://www.planet-9.com/981-chat/89780-981-testing-today-thermal-management-system-interlocks.html As you can see from Frank's schematic, the 981 incorporates a complex thermal management system with a map-controlled thermostat (item 11) which regulates the temperature dependent upon driving mode and performance setting. An engine oil-to-coolant heat exchanger (item 7) is part of the circuit. If you're of Ralph's "More data = More to worry about" persuasion, I suggest that you switch the on-board display to something else..! Jeff

Thanks tscaptain! And thanks the rest of you for your posts. I'll study the technical ones in a while when I have more time. [:)] In the meantime I'm reassured. I haven't asked my OPC; thought I'd try the forum first. It's true that a warning light would be simpler... but I like to know when the oil is warming so I can tell when it's ready to be given some beans. [:)]
