981 GT4 - running a spare set of wheels...options?

I have a 981 GT4, which I use for weekend drives and track days. Last year the Cup2s were fine as I only used on dry days really, or on track. Have since moved from Oxfordshire to Perthshire, and I will do far less track days, though still 5 or 6 i'd expect, and much more road use. Reality is, the weather is not so good up here - it's several degrees colder on average, and it rains on more days.
Therefore I would like to run two sets of wheels - one with Cup2s for track and the proper summer weather, and PS4S the rest of the year. Problem is that I'm struggling to find a set of spare wheels. A new set of OEM GT4 wheels is around £4600 from my OPC (and they would come with Pirellis). There's one set of used wheels on Ebay, priced ambitiously at £4200.
Looking aftermarket I quite like the HRE FF01 wheels, but they're £3200 before you add tyres, so not that much cheaper than the OEM option, and probably much harder to sell for a decent price if I sell the car in a few years.
So, looking for any other ideas anyone has?
The best part of £5k is a lot to tie up in a spare set of wheels, so I could just switch to PS4S for year round use I suppose, but concerned they'd just melt come track days, but interested to hear from anyone who does just that and how they found the car on these tyres on track.

Something to bear in mind is that £4600 price from your OPC is just for the wheels - it doesn't include centre caps or TPMS sensors/valves. Remember you get a 10% discount as a member of PCGB so that'll bring your price down a bit.

If you are going for a second set of wheels, then you'll need a set of TPMS sensors. For OEM items at my OPC I was quoted £850 for supply and coding(!), but doing some research I discovered that HUF seem to make them for Porsche and they supply aftermarket versions that do not need programming. These are labelled "IntelliSens RDE" and you can see which part number you need by using the search here:

http://www.products.intellisens.com/

For different colour options you'll need the product catalogue from here:

https://www.intellisens.com/downloads/

For 981 cars, it seems the part number of the silver version is "RDE048V21" and they're around £57 at Autodoc. For other colours you'll need to check the parts catalogue:

One option might be to run a spare set of 718 GT4 wheels instead of 981 GT4 wheels? I think I checked the specs when I was after wheels and I'm pretty sure they're the same offset front and rear on both cars. 718 GT4 wheels are currently £3490 a set. If you get the same colour wheels as you have now then you can re-use the same centre caps, but if you need a different colour I think they're around £150 a set.

So your cheapest option for Porsche parts is probably around £3400:

Same colour wheels you have now but 718 GT4 versions - £3490 - 10% = £3141

TPMS sensors = £57 x 4 plus £8.45 postage = £236.45

For info, I run a 718 GT4 with two sets of OEM wheels and Cup2s (summer and track days) or PS4Ss (winter). I've not run the PS4Ss on track, they're road use only for me. I use the HUF sensors on my spare wheels and they've paired with the car perfectly without having to have them coded. I've also switched back and forth and the car is happy with either set of wheels, you just need to reset the TPMS system each time.

I hope that helps! I couldn't find a better deal than OEM when I was looking around 18months ago. The only option I thought of was to get lightweight BBM wheels for summer but I wasn't prepared to pay £8k a set!

My winter wheels came from an OPC with centre caps and TPMS valves. I would certainly check your supplier if you go down that route.

Winter wheels are done that way as a complete set with tyres. Summer wheels are not [;)]

E.g. Winter wheel set for a 718 GT4:

Original wheels for a 718 GT4:

"Alloy wheel, 4 wheels (without tyre, valve or Tyre Pressure Monitoring sensor)"

Interestingly the OPC said there was an offer on the set fitted with Pirelli P Zeros for £4611, but if I wanted rims only it was £4584. At that it may be that I'm best just to go for the Pirellis, accept that they're not as good as the MPS4S, but good value for just now, and wear them out before changing to Michelins. If it includes the right TPMS then seems like excellent value (as much as Porsche GT parts can do anyway!)

Definitely. If that's an all-in price including TPMS, centre caps etc then it's a decent deal if you can live with the Pirellis. Worth clarifying exactly what's included, and if you can get another 10% off!

I am rotating Cup 2`s and PS4S on the same wheels, changed to PS4S December 2020 and left them on ever since. Once they scrub in - down to 6mm they are much improved on road vs the Cup 2`s

Am due an hour`s instruction session at Knockhill late March and an Anglesey track day early May, considering evaluating the PS4S at Knockhill prior to the change for Anglesey

EDIT : For new / used wheels try Simon at .... 9apart@gmail.com , he can often improve on OPC prices

Hi Andrew,

Please do let me know how you get on at Knockhill. Is it the 27th you are going? I was thinking I might book, but it's fully booked already.

My recently-acquired GT4 came with 2 sets of wheels. The 2nd set are a custom build by West Forged (Www.westforged.com). I didn't spec them though. They are (apparently) a similar weight to the OEM wheels but forged (and thus theoretically stronger).

I'd never heard of them, but they do some nice wheels- which do you have? If it's the Solito ones and you'd consider selling them then do let me know!. I'm guessing super pricy for new ones!

They certainly look like the Solito but they were described by Westforged as "custom" so perhaps they are in some way different. I don't actually know!
