981 Heater problem

My heater/air con fan motor has stopped working, making it difficult and unpleasant driving in winter, no demist etc. Car on its way back to Reading, but an unusual problem, so has anyone else experienced this?

Yes it has happened 2 or 3 times to me although fairly intermittently. Mine is also going back to Reading next week as apparently Porsche have a fix for it. The last time Porsche assistance came out and performed a quick fix by reaching down and spinning the fan by hand to free it up. You can reach it from the front boot near the windscreen next to the pollen filter I was told.

My fan didn't work when I started the car in the morning a couple of weeks ago. Pressing the windscreen demist button (i.e. high fan and temperature) I could hear a brief noise behind the dashboard, but still no actual fan. Fortunately the fan started after about 3 minutes of the engine idling. I did think that perhaps the battery had a low charge but reading these posts I am not so sure. Hoping it won't happen again, but I think I will mention it when it goes in for its first service in May.

Not a heater problem, but one of the heated seat buttons has failed this week by losing its "click" and staying on when it failed, and now staying off... typically a few months out of warranty. Will wait until the winter tyre change before chasing up.

Thanks for comments. New heater motor fitted by Reading, and now fine. For people where this is happening intermittently may be good to get done before it fails completely as in winter you realise how much you need heater/aircon to keep windscreen clear etc.

Mine's doing the intermitent working thing, 4/5 times over the last couple of months. Sometimes it stops for a few minutes, other times its the whole journey (55 minutes). Gets pretty cold at this time of the year with the window open to get some kind of air flow. Thank goodness for heated seats! Very frustrating and dangerous as the screen can mist up very quickly when the fan stops blowing. On its way to the OPC for a replacement fan motor today.

Heater fan motor now replaced and wallet almost £500 lighter even with PCGB discount and some goodwill. It seems to be a rather basic failure if the heater fan motor seizes up after only 3.5 years.

Car has brilliant driving dynamics, but the built quality doesn't seem to be quite there having had to replace windscreen wiper drive mechanism, seized lock on fuel filler flap (twice, before modification fitted) and now seized heater fan motor in 3.5 years and 21,000 miles. It's a real shame.

Well, very good news, after a complaint to my OPC who did the work in replacing the heater motor, Porsche UK have agreed to refund the cost of the work to which I say THANK YOU VERY MUCH PORSCHE.

result ..well done

In my experience they are generally very good at helping out on the ££ to help owners. My first experience was in 1992 when my 944S snapped its cam belt and bent 12 of the 16 valve stems .. We could not afford the 5K plus repair bill for a complete new top end, car was well out of warranty being 12 ish years old but it did have full OPC service history and was only 40K miles inside the recommended 48K cam belt change time .. PCGB paid for all the parts and a chunk of the man hours too .. That was when I know I'd pretty much always have at least one Porsche in the family
