981 M/F wheel swap to Sport Design (& coding)

Hi all,

After several years with a 997, I recently bought a 981S with PDK & am loving it :)

...but I want to swap out the M/F wheel for Sport Design (and add cruise at the same time).

I will need to add the two extra stalks; but rather than going OPC route, does anyone know if the eBay item below would work?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-PORSCHE-970-PANAMERA-FOUR-STALK-STEERING-COLUMN-SWITCH/152602632263?epid=651497511&hash=item2387d36047:g:z9cAAOSwBahVQ313:rk:1:pf:0

I assume it will need an activation code to enable the cruise to be coded, but will I need one (or just re-coding) for the computer stalk to be enabled as well?

Any help gratefully accepted,

Cheers,
Vic

I've retrofitted a couple of 981s with cruise control. You have to be VERY careful in selecting the correct stalk unit. There are 40 different variants, depending on the Model Year, and what equipment the car is fitted with. Yes, you need an activation code, but these are available elsewhere. I haven't done it before, but to fit the S/D steering wheel, you need an activation code for the OBC stalk. You may also need to change the steering wheel control unit, depending on equipment fitted. You'll also need to know someone pretty handy with a PIWIS2/3 tester. If you want more details, drop me a PM with your email address.

Thanks, Richard, things were much simpler with the 997 ;)

It's going to my trusty Indy next week for a service, so I shall see what he advises.

Cheers,

V

Jeff - All 981s use the 970 Panamera stalk unit.

Good to know Richard - more commonality across ranges than I thought, but it makes sense from the cost perspective.

I've just noticed that the 981 PET shows 3 pages of steering column switch parts with 991 and 970 prefixes..!

Jeff

I worded that badly. All 981s with cruise use the 970 stalks. The 991 part numbers on PET are all non-cruise. 970 stalks are generally cheap on eBay (I have paid as little as £70 for one).

My 981S came with multi-function wheel and cruise. I had the OPC swap the wheel to Sport Design as part of the deal. If it's any help the new steering column 4-stalk assembly they ordered to go with the SD wheel was 970 613 011 01 1E0 (I'm looking at the box it came in). Hope that helps. I don't have headlamp washers so the place for that switch is a hard blank, hence one of the many part number variables for the assembly.

They gave me back the old stalk assembly with the cruise, indicator/lights and wiper stalks intact, should anyone be interested.

Hi,

Can anyone recommend an OPC that has been willing to provide codes for recoding existing enabled functions when replacing the steering control module (stalk unit). The OPCs I have spoken to have said they will only provide these if they code the vehicle onsite. I have added the newer 991.2 MF steering wheel with heating to my 981 BS using the GPSAdaptor and thought I'd add cruise control and wheel heating at the same time, so sourced a second hand stalk unit (including clock spring) from ebay, which I now need to code. I will procure the codes for the new functions (cruise and heating) from the internet sources suggested on this forum.

Apologies for a bump on an old topic, but this is the most useful thread with the most informed contributors that I have seen on the subject.

I am based in Surrey.

I don't know of an OPC who releases codes, but if you use an independent Porsche specialist you may have better luck asking them to get the codes for you.

Hi Richard, Thank you for the reply. After some calling around I did in the end find an OPC was perfectly happy to give me the codes.
