981 Rear Tyre Wear

Had to replace both rear tyres in October after 14700 miles. Considering the occasional spirited driving sessions, they lasted well. The wear pattern was quite interesting with the outer third down to the legal limit, whilst the centre and inside thirds still at +2.5mm. Had the local OPC check the rear suspension out at the 2 year service and they pronounced no problems, everything within tolerances. I was expecting them to say it had positive camber (due to the wear pattern) although it didn't drive like it. I measured the tread depth on the new tyres and was very surprised to record that the outer third was at 5 mm; whilst the remainder of the tyre was at +7mm. These levels then explain the unexpected wear levels on the original tyres. So for all you 981 drivers out there, watch the wear rate on the outside third of the rear tyres.

I had a similar problem with my 981 with the same mileage. A quick check showed alignment OK but a full 4 wheel check resulted in some
adjustments albeit at a hefty £200 cost. I used to keep the tyres at a more comfortable 30psi but have now gone back
to the recommended 32psi. I also invested in a proper tyre pressure gauge by RACE X PROFESSIONAL

Tyre wear on my 981 Cayman S is much better than on my 987.2. That did less than 8000 mls on the rears before they were approaching 3mm in the middle and inner sections and replaced, whereas the fronts were fine. The rears still have plenty of tread left on the 981 so the latest suspension and tyre pressure changes have worked wonders on tyre life as well as ride quality.
