Something hit the screen driving on the motorway today and i now have a crack at the bottom centre of the screen. [&o]
I'm insured with a £70 excess, but is there anything i need to worry about just getting my insurance companies suppliers to do it?
Are all replacement screens the same?
Thanks
jon

Jon,

I use the firm that my local OPC (Exeter) use. They offered me a choice of Porsche branded and St Gobain equivalent and I picked the latter as it was immediately available. A week later my screen got hit in the same place as yours, such is life.

I think it is more important to have a basis for confidence in the fitter/firm than the glass. It might also be better to have it replaced in their facility rather than a random mobile fitter.

Ralph

Jon I Agree with Ralph see if your insurance company can arrange to get your Windscreen replaced via your local Porsche dealership if not make sure the windscreen being fitted is a Porsche approved vision.

I had my Windscreen repaired by my Porsche Dealership who did an excellent job and my insurer even let me pay my £50 fee directly to them and sorted out all the rest with them personnel.

Yours sincerely Kevin.

The main problem I had was with the rubber seal that goes around the top and sides of the screen. This is quite awkward to get seated correctly. If you get someone who has done it before you should be ok.

I think this relates to the 987.2 models as the 981 does not have a rubber seal. See

thanks for replies, been in touch with my insurer they use auto windscreens, no other alternative.

They are one of the larger companies, so I'm inclined to accept that and pay £75 rather than probably many hundreds to get it done myself.

I imagine there is not a huge and diverse market in third party low cost versions of porsche windscreens, so i should get a good quality replacement. Being naive?

Cheers

I had the same choice in the Summer as my insurer would only use Autoglass or give me a max of £200. OPC quoted £800. After reading some reviews, with some fear and trepidation I decided to use Autoglass. First appointment they arrived with the wrong screen. Rearranged and came with the correct screen. Very experienced fitter did a good job. Note it will probably be a Pilkington screen although they say it is like for like.

I have never spoken to any of my insurance companies about replacing windscreens. I just go to the company I want to use, they check the registration number of the car on the insurers database, tell me what the excess will be (normally c£75) and it gets done. I pay the fitter the excess and that's it.

Lockton, the Club insurers, allowed me to have my cracked screen replaced at my local OPC and refunded me the full amount less the small excess in a couple of days. The OPC used a small independent company and the job included a new rubber and trim.

It's been debated on the forum as long as there have been Caymans, some OPC's would say that it had to be an original fit screen or it would invalidate the warranty and of course some suppliers fit OEM and others don't. Porsche did at one time say that another manufacturer's screen would invalidate their factory warranty.

When I had a replacement screen fitted in my 987.1S it was through my insurer and I think it was by autowindsreens who had been AA windscreens but were then under new ownership. The screen they fitted had all of the same markings as the original and there were never any problems regarding warranty but just how many technicians look?

I had a glass repair done by the other main repairer and was never pleased with the result it was so glaringly obvious but it held and stayed in place for some years it always felt smooth to the touch while looking like a crater but of course it would depend on the operator and the technique they use. If you do a search it should be available.

From experience, whoever you get to do the screen, watch them like a hawk. About 10 years ago Autoglass replaced the screen on my 968 coupe, the fitter cut through the paint and galvanising at the top of the NS A pillar but hid the damage under the rubber seal, about 3 years later, with paint bubbling where the A pillar meets the roof, it cost about £300 to have the screen removed, damage repaired and resprayed then screen refitted.

Opposite side of the coin - 18 months ago I had to have the screen on the MB replaced twice in the space of 3 months. Insurers use AA Windscreens, their local fitter was absolutely superb, would not hesitate to recommend him.

Thanks all. Im inclined to think as long as I do watch the fitting closely I shouldn't be taking a great risk with the insures option. I know you can get insurance from the likes of lockton where you are in control, but for a current car like mine the premium is several multiples above the market.

cheers

just an update, auto windscreens turned up monday.

with the wrong screen.

Still waiting for them to contact me about re-booking, or a reply to my web complaint. gave up on the phone after 1 hour of waiting.

Having checked with OPC Reading they have 6 screens in stock! I'll go back to my insurer tomorrow and say i need it done some other way.

J

It's very much down to the skill/experience of the fitter. I had good experience with them and bad ones. So it is a good idea to watch them when fitting it...

get an oem screen if the car is less than 3 years old

not a pattern part

My insurance would not pay for a oem screen or use my fitter so I paid for it myself.

it's quite cheap if you get discount for the screen from Porsche and just pay a pro to fit it.

I did it all for under £350

I did find a loop hole though and months later I claimed the full amount back, the loop hole is now closed though.

Finally spoke to them, first line was,

"we are waiting for an aftermarket screen".

"but the fitter told me they could only get the 4 aerial screen from porsche"

put on hold

"yes you're right we need to get it from Porsche"

"they have 6 in stock what's the hold up?"

"i have escalated it".

I 'll give them to COP Monday, and then get it done myself via OPC, and go back to halifax to claim or at least try.

Beginning to think re-examination of 'premium' insurance provider like lockton might be in order.

normally only an issue if the cars over 3 years old.

if under 3 years they have to provide a oem screen if you ask them
