986 3.2 S

All,

First time post on the Boxster section.. I am looking into possibly buying a 986 3.2S, most likely from one of the independents.

I have a couple of questions.

Can Litronics (Xenons, or whatever they are called) be retro fitted on a 986 with a Porsche kit? If yes, would anyone know if the beam can be "dipped" for Continental driving?

There seem to be plenty of good examples out there, but is there anything I should especially be on the look out for? I shall resist the 2 usual questions ( which are adequately covered elsewhere on the forum!), but is the car's provenance of Zuffenhausen or Finland, of any relevance?

As you can see i currently own (and have owned for 10 yrs) a 993, so I am a novice with the Boxster, and any help is gratefully appreciated!

Thanks!

stuttgart or usikaupunki ? - doesn't matter, in fact the numbers built at Stuttgart were so low it was purely to keep their hands in so maybe not so good ? Paintshop in Finland higher quality, but not necessarily any superior on the car.

Usual things, tyre wear, knocking from suspension, rear main seal leaks, intermediate shaft failure. Condition of roof, replacemnets with glass screen now under £900 fitted. Facelift cars from 03MY not looking quite so dated and not much dearer nowadays.

There was a blue 51 plate in Stratstone Landrover last week for £13k - takes a bit of finding on their website !

Another (probably daft) question... Does the boxster (986) need a geometry alignment from time to time?.... See, it's the old 993 in me... can't help but wonder...[:)]

Always advisable to have the geometry checkd every now and again - worn suspension bushes and trailing rear arms will soon show up on tyre wear.

Litronics can be retrofitted - there is a Porsche kit available. AFAIK, the halogen units are removed and the Litronic units are just plugged in. However, I recall reading somewhere that retro-fitted Litonics will only work on low beams and won't raise when you use high beam (as it does on factory fitted units).

All is not lost as apparently there is a non-Porsche module that you can buy on eBay which fixes this. Once this is wired in it will aim the projector lamp higher on main beam.

If you're driving on the Continent, it takes about 15 minutes to adapt the Litronics for driving on the other side of the road. You have to remove the units, take off the lamp units and with the aid of a screwdriver, move the metal blade inside the lamp unit to the 'T' (touring) position. All this blade does is to clip the raised part of the beam to avoid blinding oncoming drivers. What it doesn't do is to increase the amount light on the kerbside. This means you don't have the same level of illumination when driving on dip beams on the right as you do when driving in the UK.

When you get back to the UK you just take the units out and move the blade back to the original position.

Retro fitting a set of litronics is silly money - to fully comply you need the headlight units, washer system, motors installed for the self levelling and probably an extra wiring loom - some model years are easier than others, but its hardly worth the cost. You'll be looking at £500 or more for a used set of headlight units alone, thena similar amount for the rest of the kit and you've still got to fit it.

You can fit xenon kits into the standard headlamps, i did it on my old 986, then moved them to my current 987S - no issues in use, and no problems at MOT time either.

You can pick up Chinese made kits on ebay for £50 (not advisable, variable quality and reliability) or from respected parts places for under £180.
