986 3.2S - is it worth saving?

Morning All

Thought i'd pop over and see what's going on at the other end of the Porsche world! Anyhow, 5 mins round the corner there's a 986 3.2S that appears to have been laid up/dumped. Iirc it's been sat there since we moved into our new gaff mid August, and I recently noticed the rear window has come away from the hood and it's been sat there taking on water. I checked it out last weekend: the light grey interior is pretty knackered - without any water damage the seats look like a dog has been at them. The hood is covered in green mildew and aside from the damaged rear plastic window looks like it could be saved. There's a ding over the rear wheel arch (fixable) but aside from the age of the paintwork the exterior looks serviceable. It's dark metallic blue btw - Midnight or Iris? I'm no expert but the discs look shafted - considerable amounts of rust, the calipers need a complete refurb as do the 17" wheels (new rubbers as well).

I'll try and get some pics up this eve (took a few, and redacted them but the iMac is still in a box following the house move) but I'm trying to work out whether I should get in touch with the owner and see what the score is. There's a pile of trash on the passenger seat and laid in top is the log book for an Alfa GTV Lusso with the guy's name and address plain for all to see, so I was going to give him a shout and see if a) he is the owner and b) ask why his 3.2S is laid up some 10 miles from where he lives (and tell him the rear window is out and it's taking on water) and what his plans are. It's taxed to March 18 so I presume has been running at some point this yr, unless he's taxing it to avoid having to retake the vehicle test (diff rules here in the IOM).

The wife has provisionally given me clearance to stick it next to my S2 in the garage ("you'll have to move your hobby bench though" said she) if I can get it cheap enough as a long term fixer upper. I don't mind doing stuff myself but anything technical my local indie will do.

so, what do the you reckon from above description? Worth seeing if I can get it for a few hundred £ and then getting my indie to take a look underneath for anything major before getting it in the garage to dry out?

And I did my bit yesterday - stopped on the way home from B&Q with my daughter, cut a rubble bag to size and gaffer taped it over the gaping hole where the rear window should be so it's doesn't take on any more water. Hopefully the owner won't mind if/when someone comes to collect it.

Cheers
Lee

Have you checked the MOT history for failure/advisories, or is it different in the I.O.M.?

Chris

Could be an ims failure. Saw a much tidier car at auction recently (but don’t know if it sold) with a bust engine

The colour is likely to be Lapis blue metallic assuming around 2000 to 2001 model year. The hoods took a glass window on repair or on the later models.
You are into a new battery, new disks calipers and pads to front at least, say £1000. My car had been neglected and ultimately brake pipes had to be renewed, air con units changed and front radiators, two of each, and the condenser. Head lamp main switch possibly u/s for another £100. Unlikely to be the IMS bearing at this age. Probably reupholstering in grey leather if that is the overall specification. So could be £3000 to get it all right, and remember you need the radio code. Can you see who supplied the car?

best wishes

Hi Lee (IOM too)
Just wondering if there is a onboard computer box (or similar electronics) under the passenger seat on 986 models? I know the later Boxsters do as any water ingress can get expensive. If you're not on BoXa.net I would ask there - loads of friendly experts to offer advice.
Gordon.

Water ingress on Boxster not good, control module located under passenger seat & if it gets wet then expect a whole world of pain. Can be four figures to sort properly & interior trim (seats / carpet) will need to be removed to dry out effectively due to the insulating foam underneath the carpet.

From the brief description you have given it sounds like it would need to be cheap and a runner. A second hand engine will set you back £2.5-£3k plus fitting, a full rebuild £6-8k, that’s on top of the other work mentioned above.
