986 Boxster Headlights

My 2003 Boxster suffers from burned inner headlight lenses where a previous owner installed more powerful bulbs. I am investigating replacement units but am considering upgrading through either aftermarket LED units or used standard units with LED bulbs.
Has anyone gone down this road and can offer some advice on does and don'ts and how I can get more light output without damaging the inner lenses again?
The car is non Litronic of course
 
In my 987 I’ve fitted Phillips dipped beam leds and PIAA led bulbs for main beam. They have made a huge difference. Previously I’d tried brighter halogens and also an hid kit.
