986 Boxster Rear Light Conversion Mini Project

Hi All,

I just wanted to share my mini project with you. I purchased by 986 Boxster S back in January this year and never really thought much of the half LED aftermarket lights that the previous owner had fitted. There was nothing wrong with them at all they were just not really for me, and me being me and liking to be slightly different to the rest I also didn’t want to just fit the oem amber or clear rear lights on either. I am a massive fan of the 987 RS60 with its red rear lights and also noted that the 986 US spec 550 Anniversary also has red rear lights. With my Boxster being Arctic Silver I started to look at options around this. The 550 US spec lights demand a premium of around £400 by the time I have shipped them so I looked at carrying out a conversion instead.

Anyway I sourced a used set of amber oem lights, some red light tint spray and some 2k clearcoat. I am pretty good with paintwork so thought I would give it a go and my god they came out amazingly well. They look factory oem to me. The one interesting challenge I had though was getting them to flash amber in order to satisfy both UK road law and MOT etc. I found after a bit of research from the VW camper van forums that using LED amber bulbs would do the trick and sure enough it did They shine through perfect amber. I am so pleased with the finished result. What do you think?
