986 BoxsterS 2000 Glass Window Heater

Can anyone answer what might be a simple query please? I intend to have my plastic window hood replaced with a glass window version by BAS in Cwmbran. They have confirmed that the electrical connection for the heated rear window is already present in the car and checking in the handbook shows a small blanking plate just behind the passenger seat belt top mount, but that does not look the same in my car.

I have attached a photo of mine and can see a small flimsy plastic lever sticking up. Knowing how easy it is to break some small plastic parts, especially 20 years of age, I am cautious about applying any force to this.
Am I looking at the correct part and will I find an electrical connection underneath?

Thanks for any advice

Bruce

Hi Bruce

I have recently been looking for the same socket on our 1998 986 boxster with a view to plugging in the cable for the hard top rear window. I found the attached photos via google which proved very helpful (I believe they came from a site called Renntech.org but i wasnt able to access the site). this helped me find the socket hole behind the passenger seat, it looked much like the photos and didn't have a cover over it - however this could be because someone got there before me. The socket hole was empty, with no plug or wires. With a little fishing around below the plastic socket hole i found the wiring harness and socket.

If the plastic cover in your photo is in the same location as the socket hole in these images you are probably in the right area - perhaps feel below to see if there is a wiring harness running up to the underside of the cover. It is my understanding that all 986 boxsters were built with the wiring harness for a hardtop heated rear window, which is why there's a button on the dash

I hope this provides some help, good luck

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Many thanks for the quick reply. The photos certainly look like the area I was referring to, behind the passenger seat belt pivot. I’ll have a root around underneath the cover, if I can get in there, to locate the wiring harness in the daylight tomorrow. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Regards

Bruce

Hi Geoff,

I gently prised up the small plastic cover and just as you suggested there was a connector situated in the space below. Luckily there was no need to root around, so now I’m all set to get the new soft top installed when we are allowed to travel!

Many thanks for your help.

Regards

Bruce

Hi Bruce - that's great, thanks for the update. Its interesting to know there is a cover to go over the socket.

Good luck with the new soft top

All the best

Geoff
