986 Boxters 3.2S Rear brake problem, please help!

Evening All,

I'm on the final stages of my full restoration and have hit a last minute snag that's got me baffled!

Went to reverse the car out the other day and there was a clunk when I released the handbrake, no big issue the car hasn't been moved for a few weeks so clearly the rear handbrake shoes stuck a bit. Anyway the problem was worse as the car would only move forwards or backwards by 3/4 of a revolution of the road wheel. Handbrake must be stuck on I thought. Slackened off the handbrake cable but it made no difference. Jacked the rear of the car up, o/s wheel was free, n/s only turned either way 3/4 of a turn then was stuck solid!!! Removed the calliper and rear discs and couldn't see anything obvious apart from a scuff mark on the handbrake linkage at the bottom of the shoes. Removed the shoes checked the cable for free movement, all ok. The rear shoes are new Pagid ones. Copper slipped the contact metal parts reassembled and adjusted. Checked handbrake operation and free wheel movement afterwards, all ok. Put the wheel back on and tried to reverse the car and the problem was still there. Jacked the car up again and the wheel locks both ways by hand, however when I remove the wheel it all frees up and is normal. Taken it all apart again and everything looks normal. Clearly the disc is catching on something when the wheel is on but nothing is obvious. Could it be the linkage connected to the handbrake cable??

To eliminate anything else I removed the n/s rear shoes completely and reassembled everything so no handbrake on the n/s at all, the car reversed out perfectly so clearly it's an issue with the shoes or something else?!

Help would be appreciated as I need to move the car on Saturday to take it for 4 wheel alignment.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe the length of your wheel bolts?
just one bolt could be an odd length and going through too far and hitting the brake shoes?
just a guess, good luck

Sounds feasible Bryan, it's as though the wheel turns and then jams against the shoes somehow. It locks up completely solid, I'd burn the clutch out trying to force it. There is a mis match of bolts to be fair, it could be that! I'm probably over thinking the problem! I suppose there can't be much else....!

Bryan, spot on diagnosis! Just been out and checked the locking wheel bolt and noticed the tapered collar was missing hence the bolt went it too far! Bingo!

thanks for your assistance.

cheers
