Hello all. Just been told by my local OPC that all four corners need replacing, disca and pads. She is a 2001 X. only on 25k miles...

Is this normal?

They've quoted nearly £1100!

Thanks

Have they said why?

Is it that they are corroded (common - especially if the car is put away after washing, without taking for a brake "drying" run)?

Or is it that they estimate they might need replacing sometime before the next service (maybe...[&:] )?

Or have they actually failed an MOT?

Mark, they've sed they are 'shot' however i understand that the inner side gets corroded.?

I'm all for saving 800 notes...

Does it make much of a difference between Porsche genuine parts and aftermarket parts...? I guess these are aftermarket parts..

They also stock genuine parts, a bit more pricey and not often in stock.
I think its just a case of re-branding, I can't tell the difference.

Even if you buy the parts from the OPC (don't forget the 10% discount), you'll still save on labour (just think of the £100 an hour they charge...)

If you've received your club membership card then you already have signed up[;)]

Bear in mind though that not all OPC's honour a 10% discount. And some will only honour it on parts, not labour[:'(]

10% discount! Where do i signup!

LOL! You see - it IS worth joining the club [8D]

The cost saved on the parts should cover a significant part of the membership fee, throw in a discount on servicing as well.... and it's a no-brainer.

I think most OPC's honour the discount since the agreement with the club this year.

(Just in case you really are not yet a member, you can join --> HERE <-- )

Nah - ordered all the bits, and a few new Garage toys... i'll do it myself next weekend...

All,

I've ordered from ECP.

Rear
2 x ZIMMERMAN Rear DISC Sport - Cross drilled PN 104330629 - £53 ea
1 x ATE Rear pad set - PN 101330175 - £43

Front
2 x ZIMMERMAN Front DISC Sport - PN 104330619 - £59 ea
1 x TEXTAR Brake Pad Set - PM 101330160 - £42.50

Are these reasonable alternatives to OPC supplied kit? Its all ECP provide as options and i've chosen the most expensive.

Or should i stick my nexk out an get some brembo kit from elsewhere!

Can anyone identify anything else i should need?

Thanks

Officially you are also supposed to get a new retaining pin, spring clip and cotter pin, as well as the wear sensors....but I wouldn't bother.

When you start the job it might help to get a couple of small g-clamps to help push the pistons back into the caliper if you can't manage it by hand. Also remember to pump the brake pedal when done, and reduce the brake fluid level in the resevoir afterwards too. (I did this using a clean spray-top from a Windolene bottle)

Once you've installed the pads and brakes, read this link for bedding the new gear in

http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp_bedintheory.shtml

And follow these instructions for the bedding in procedure.

http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

You will also need a hex insert to get the calipers off - it should be mentioned in the links above. The bolts are also supposed to be replaced each time. You have got a torque wrench I hope? ("Tight enough" is not an option! [;)])

I have a torque wrench... And am now fully equipped with the bedding in procedure...

Does anyone know the part numbers for the bolts, retaining pin, spring clip, cotter pin and wear sensors. I guess i'll need these for each corner?

C3C1 Wear sensors (F) - P996.612.365.00
C3D1 Wear sensors (R) - P986.612.365.00
Brake pack (includes spring clip, pins, bolts, etc) - P996.352.959.01 (same part number for front and rear on 2.5/2.7)

Anthony - I got a Halfords Pro hex insert (1/2 " Drive) to do mine: £6.50. 80Nm is the torque setting for the caliper bolts. I put the original bolts back in mine to complete the job on the day but I need to replace them - how much are they I wonder?
Let me know if your sensors/cables are shot - you can have mine for the cost of the postage (or pick them up from the Camberley area) they are bit grubby but not worn.
I only did the rear disks & pads & couldn't believe the improvement!

Russtbird,

Very gracious of you.. thank you!

I'll roll her out the garage this weekend and take a look, planning on stripping the brakes down bleeding. I figure i may as well..

I'll get a price for the Bolts from my OPC and let the forum know.

Thanks

Ant
