986 Exhaust Mods?

So I have seen this:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwYaKx0wec4

Also read on boxa.net http://www.boxa.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=30968&hl=oettles spoke to this company and its £295+VAT, they mention they add 2 pipes and all the current exhaust is left intact and road legal, they mention that the sound is better and no dron whilst crusing because the normal silencer's comes into action.

So I was wondering if I have any other options and prices for the same, want a nice sound at the least amount of £££'s but I don't want any nasty drooing annoying noises. (fussy bugger)

LOL - Sorry. Didn't spot you were not a member

Porsche Post is the club magazine. (The club that runs this forum).

http://www.porscheclubgb.com/Publications/PorschePost.aspx

So I assume this covers the the above I asked about, or does it go over other options too?

If I join now would I be in time to get this months edition that has this article?

Oh man, there me dwelling over £295+VAT on getting this mod and I notice the membership is £66, so that £66 on top of the £295+VAT that I was finding hard to let go :-(

Actually its mainly my fault I have been spending a little too much on boys toys, maybe I should wait, xmas is round the corner.

You also get 10% discount at OPC's when a member.

The PP is an OK magazine but there is no way I would ever purchase it separately.

I modified my exhaust myself for a lot less than £350.

In fact I would say it can be done for less than £100 quite easily[:D]

Would you be willing to share how you did that?

I am going to a local custom exhaust place tomorrow to see what info they have and cost.

It's all covered over on Boxa.net

Not sure where you are but 'Hayward & Scott' could do the mod, for a bit more mulah.

I'm interested in hearing about the £100 version I have searched boxa and seen the H&S and even spoken to them.

Hi

I have fitted the Oettles system. The sound is fantastic, not only inside but outside as well ! It is louder but does not boom. It will be markedly loade, but you will find that you will enjoy revving more. I once was behind an AC Cobra revving and showing off. I then revved my Boxster hard and blipped - more than a match and he stopped the blipping and revving. People have commented that it sounded like a very powerful motorbike - although that was in an underground car park.

Note one thing though: if you drive around town and like using low revs / high gear changing up early, then you will notice the difference in less low down torque. This is because the free flowing factor of the exhause affects low down torque. It is more marked on lower capacity Boxsters - 2.5's, 2.7's. However I have found a way round it - just use some old wine bottle corks to plug the bypass pipes - I usually do this at MOT. Also if you install make sure you put new clamps, as any gaps in the fittings will cause MOT emmission failure.

I am thinking of selling mine (exhaust separately ) if you are interested.

I might be could you let me how many miles your exhaust has done and condition and off course price please.

I am interested in having the exhaust bypass on the exhaust of my 986 boxster.I have aRook unit on mine which sounds fine but a little more noise would be nice if there was no resonance. However boxsters are marginal with emissions at mot time. How would the partial bypass effect this? The official Porsche sports unit would get over this by closing the valve.Has anybody else had this done by Hayward and Scott ?I live in the Dartford area and would like to get in touch with someone who has had it done that I could listen to_Other than that I am sure other
Boxster owners would be interested to hear the results on line.

Tony

I have had the bypass exhaust fitted.

1. Firstly very easy to fit - just as per standard exhaust - if you remove the bumper it is easier.

2. Fit new connecting clamps (exhaust to catalyst) or you may fail the MOT - with o2 leakage. I failed because I tried to use old clamps which leaked,

3. No need to block the bypass ports for MOT , but I do as a precaution,

4. The sound is absolutely fantastic in terms of sportiness. There isn't a boom and I have used the car for long journeys without any issues. It is very much like the 911 sports exhausts you hear but higher pitched - it s/be after all the fundamental design is similar to official sports exhaust.

5. I have tried to adapt some valves as per original sports exhaust which close of the bypass ports, but for now just use wine corks to plug !- (as recommended by Oettle). I do this for track days due to noise regulation.

6. By the way, if you are thiinking of purchasing, I will be putting mine on the market in spring - Feb/ March, as possibly selling car.

7. I have used the above exhaust in conjunction with a full flow induction manifold and air filter. With this combination the sound can only be described as intoxicating. (and the acceleration improved .) I will be putting the package for sale around Feb/March.

Hope above helps.

Hi.
Thanks forthe advice .When I fitted the Rook exhaust my car failed the mot also because the clamp needed renewing..I think I will get Hayward and Scott to do the work and I wonder if they are able to do a reading them selves toshow emmisions acceptable for mot purposes? How much were you charged for fitting the cold air induction system and did you have any problems with the maf sensor afterwards? I am warming to the idea of having the exhaust modified but don` t fancy having corks fitted for mot purposes.

Tony

Whats the full flow manifold all about? Which air filter? Any idea on price so I can decide whether to save up :)

Hi

The full flow manifold + air filter system was fitted by myself . It is not difficult just fiddly due restricted space in engine compartment. The MAF was unaffected and worked perfectly normally. Idling etc no change whatsoever whilst top end performance improved markedly. The in cabin sound was scintillating at top end !

For the exhaust the "cork" remedy only used for track days as I say recommended by Oettle and it works ! The bypass tubes meet the tail pipe and easy to push in here. For MOT there is no need to block these - indeed I have passed MOT without these in place. As you have found it is use of old or incorrectly fitted clamps between the box and catalyst that allow oxygen into the system and hence fail the mot. (Some garages mistakenly change the lambda sensors). The Porsche design for the sports exhaust is more or less the same so there should be no detraction from performance or emmission specification for the Oettle unit.

Once you combine the two - intake manifold and exhaust system, you arrive at the best compromise in terms of sound and performance IMO. The sound remains sweet without booming with a crisp raspy bottom end furnished by the exhaust and a creamy sporty top end from the intake manifold. Power increases (or the perception of it !) without the nasty boomy sound you get from some aftermarket exhausts or decrease in bottom end power.

Jeegnesh - I will be putting both on market in spring and will let you know prices. (See Oettle website for exhaust £ and search full flow manifold and filter for £ for idea, but mine will be considerably less !). If you need further advice I am based in London or we could meet up at one of the club meets in London.

Jeegnesh, if you are only interested in the true flow intake + air filter please look at your e-mail or contact me below. The package normally sells for £228 from Porscheshop, and adds 10-20bhp. I have removed from car and it is ready to fit and go (I can also help you with the latter if needed).
