986 Gearbox

Hi, I had RMS replaced by OPC few weeks ago. Three year old 2.7 986. Since then I have a whine when in fifth at about 3k revs. OPC have said its a problem with the gearbox / fifth gear or syncro.. An indi has said he thinks its the flywheel..

They (opc) say the work they did when replacing the seal wouldn't have caused this.

OPC have said they will seek a goodwill payment from Porsche, however as the RMS was replaced under goodwill ( I doubt they will now fund this..

Anybody any idea as to whether their RMS replace could have caused this problem? I presume the gearbox / flywheel / clutch is removed to replace seal?

Cheers

cant see it could have anything to do with the RMS repair, the gearbox as a whole is taken out, the clutch assembly and finally the flywheel are taken of the crankshaft, seal changed and then simple reassembly, the whine was probably always there but you are now listening for something and paying attention to the area - so of course you will find things.

The whine could be many things, even a wheel bearing - only noticable in fifth because speed increases hum in a wheel bearing, at 3000 rpm you are doing 75MPH - try driving (when you have the whine) from side to side - obviously on a clear road - does the noise increase or decrease depending in which direction you are steering in.

Thanks. Indi thinks flywheel so that may be correct he has already ruled out wheelbearing. OPC are convinced gearbox..
So will have to wait and see what they say..
