986 Handbrake shoes strange construction

Dear All,
Had a look at the handbrake shoes recently (one side only) could not see any obvious joint of friction material to shoe and it doesn't seem that they might be completely worn away. Also, if I apply the handbrake with the car rolling the brakes come on with a strange kick-back thump which can be felt through the lever. Are the shoes somehow special? All the ones I can see advertised look like traditionally constructed drum brake shoes with the friction strip bonded to the carrier. Anyone else tried braking this way with car rolling?
Soon be Autumn,
Pat

Thanks Jeff,
On closer inspection (cleaned edge with abrasive paper) I can see the 'join' they do, of course, have friction strip bonded to the metal. Now I need to decide to replace the discs; they are not too scored but are worn down by about 1-2mm and the interior h/brake surface is really pitted. The handbrake cables are definitely shot. Great fun. Oh joy!
Anyone got any spares for sale?
Best,

Pat
