986 Key Remote Not Working

My friend has gone to his car this morning and neither his regular or spare key remote will unlock his car. The lights operate on both remotes and the alarm red light is flashing as it should in the car. The spare also has a new battery and the car has a new battery fitted in the last month. Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks, Gary

Gary,

All very odd if everything’s been working up until now. It sounds as though the remotes are transmitting OK, and I assume that the keys open the bonnet and boot?

I don’t know if this Rennlist 996 post will help, but could be worth a try (shared electronics with the 986):

I had the same problem with both of my keys. I tried the "trick" of holding down the lock button for six seconds after manually unlocking the door to "resync" the key with the car. No dice. I ended up taking it to Porsche out here in Santa Clara and was told that those 996 keys have circuit boards that go bad after about 10 years. Sometimes the light will still turn on when you press the buttons, but the car will never respond no matter what you do. The temporary solution was to remember that you turn left to unlock, turn right to lock when you are manually opening the door. If you do the reverse the alarm will go off. When you get the door open you have to start the car within 10 seconds or the alarm will go off. This is because the car needs to "read" the key when it is unlocked manually or it assumes it was jacked.

Thanks for your input Jeff. I think he's found some detail in the handbook regarding resetting the key remote in the ignition by pressing and holding the button for 10 seconds after unlocking the car manually so he's going to give that a try.

Just a quick update. The main key is now working after following the re-setting process in the ignition. Still nothing with the spare though.

I had a similar issue with a 986 key, I sent it away to www.keyfobrepair.co.uk, who fitted new switches & it worked perfectly. Lots of members across on BOXA.net have used them as well with a lot of success. They charge £35-00 for 996-996 keys.

how long has the car been parked up between working and not working ? ( the go to sleep after a few days ) As others have said odd for both keys to fail together. Has the spare one worked previously ?

Thanks for this, I'll pass it on and yes is was probably sat for 3-4 days.
