Mark,

I would guess that your 2.5 Boxster is a fairly high mileage car, so I'd check for excessive wear in the CV-joints before investigating anything else.

Mark,

I wouldn't have thought that at that mileage you should have a CV-joint issue, but you never know, especially if it's been subjected to a lot of driving in heavy traffic.

Are you getting a clunking noise on take-off or when using throttle-on/throttle-off at low speed in 1st or 2nd gear, a typical symptom of CV-joint wear?

Jeff

Agree, sounds like CV joint, the boots are prone to splitting and this is age related rather than mileage so a split boot will allow the grease out and water in - which takes out the joint.
2 Joints on each drive shaft so you should examine all 4 boots., surprised though as changing the wheel bearing makes the boots very visible on the side you were working on and would have thought you would have noticed grease flung everywhere around a split boot.
If both boots are split on one side and clearly a CV joint has worn out - the knocking, you'd be better to just buy a whole shaft with the boots and CV joints already fixed - just needing fitting, cheaper to replace the CVs and boots but not much of a saving - a new shaft complete will give you peace of mind.
