986 S cruise control retro fit issue

I've just retrofitted my 2002 986 Boxster S with OBC and cruise control stalks.

Everything is wired up. I've used my PIWIS 3 setup and enabled OBC in the instrument cluster.
That works great.

I've enabled cruise in the DME but I don't get any options for cruise in the instrument cluster coding and I'm not getting a cruise light in the dash.
I've tested the cruise stalk inputs in PIWIS and that all seems to register ok.

The order type in the DME is set to 986321. If I set it to something else (e.g. 986310 or 986311) then I do see a cruise option in the cluster, but enabling it doesn't seem to have any effect (still no dash light).

Does anybody have an idea what the problem might be?

I don't think you can code cruise on a 986 with PIWIS3. I don't think the option exists in PIWIS2 either - there were a few horror stories about bricked instrument clusters when coding cruise using early versions of the software. It is best done with PST2 or PIWIS1, which both use Bosch software.

Thanks for the reply. That might explain why it's not working. Strangely, if I change the order type in the DME - then the cruise control option for the cluster does show up, and I can change it, then write the new setting but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Could it be enabled by reading, modifying, then writing back the eeprom?

It is odd that the cruise option appears when you change the order type, but as you have found out, it doesn't seem to do anything. I'm sure you could edit the eeprom if you know which bits to change. If you are anywhere near me (Maidenhead, Berkshire) I would be happy to dig out my PIWIS1 and enable it for you.

Thanks for the offer - I'm not a million miles away - just up the m40 near Banbury. If I don't have any luck getting it sorted I may well come back to you and make a trip down the motorway.

I don't think I'll need to venture down the m40 Richard, I seem to have cracked it!

I just spent half an hour in a very hot Boxster cabin and have managed to get the light to work.

I used PIWIS 3 in developer mode. That let me go into the manual coding for the cluster, which showed 2 options for cruise control (tempostat). I set them both to enabled - still no dashboard light.

Then I ran a vehicle handover and the light suddenly appeared on the dash. With the engine running it turns on and off with the cruise switch so it all seems good. I just need to try it when driving to make sure that cruise actually works.

Incidentally, in non-development mode, there is still no cluster setting for cruise.

Where did you get the cruise control retrofit kit from?

Expensive?

I have a 986 2001 with on board computer and I'd love to have option this fitted.

I don't have enough brave pills to do it myself so if you can recommend someone with the time and skills to do this I would appreciate it.

I'm in the Towcester/Silverstone area.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve,

I bought a new 4 stalk steering column switch direct from Porsche (in Towcester). You can pick them up secondhand but the ones I saw weren't much cheaper than going for a new one. You also need a cap for the cruise stalk.

The wiring looms I got from mdbdiagnistics.co.uk I needed both the OBC and cruise ones.

To be fair, it's not a difficult job to do. I found the hardest part to be running the cruise loom from the stalk to the ECU in the boot.

The looms come with instructions, and the wires come labelled to say which pin on the existing loom connectors they are for. Those connectors themselves are numbered too.

It probably took me 6 hours or so in total. I did the steering column / instrument cluster part last Thursday afternoon and then ran the cruise wiring to the ECU on Saturday morning. There has then been a couple of hours messing about with PIWIS trying to get things activated.

If you do a Google search for "Boxster 986 cruise control retrofit" you should find a guide on boxa.net that details how it is done.

The installations on Boxa.net are superb.

You mentioned above "wiring looms I got from mdbdiagnistics.co.uk". Do you have their URL, I can't find their web site.

And finally, the phrase "If you connect the DME to the instrument cluster on a MY2001 or later car, you'll probably blow the cruise circuitry in the DME. Be warned! :)" scares the bejesus out of me. This would just be my luck.

According to my VIN, mines a MY02. Guess I just leave this wire off.

Just seen this as well https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284636373390?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D240365%26meid%3D1e7ed16aabc84127a22bc6e549bb0003%26pid%3D101195%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D163304717866%26itm%3D284636373390%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv9PairwiseWithPLXWebFitmentPromotionWCatRecallConfirmFitSignal%26brand%3DPorsche&_trksid=p2047675.c101195.m1851&amdata=cksum%3A2846363733901e7ed16aabc84127a22bc6e549bb0003%7Cenc%3AAQAHAAABMCkbP6WxbTSrXLtSRtUj6lcMU1wF6BNs%252Btw5h0iM0o%252Bn3fpuWWP1P44m5b9dXVyl1BfbcyAKVqttrVA7WAVAMV3WZW5q5UXH7ZE2D6dsU5dTIvylq%252F6Lky%252FMJ4lIKQs3f9OoY0%252BuFBdaND%252Fr4UFtzf8ycuxfpkj9VxsNNDxbLD5476b%252BNzYyvlEQOh7ooF3%252B7cylFobaH9YIJ%252Fc7W0Qk3vI8ndJUSKHNBNUFgYcVfHRNHDXxoaP%252BTNZVB9eiXDxEiWjFvGPV%252BitvzBecKdv6TwtyQXyI1XqBOtPuzzIas4KqMIodTA86SbQykUDWf%252BkG35IZ%252Bl9%252FY4FauiqHB%252B3zvo%252BQM4tLXSiQEo9AeN9rJPAqWxwsdV7D9b8NJ6t6TMUhA%252BeG8OLlTnfUM1hTEdat1FM%253D%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2047675&epid=1216397115

Claims brand new. Looks very good, and cheap for £227.

What to do now... hhhmmm...

That's the Boxa guide that I followed. Apart from the bits about making the wiring loom, as I had one premade from mdbdiagnostics.

Sorry I mistyped the name before, the loom is from [link]https://www.mdbdiagnostics.co.uk/cruise-control[/url]

Mine is a 2002 and I left the wire between the cluster and DME disconnected. The instructions with the loom explicitly tell you to do that.

My set of stalks, brand new from Porsche in Towcester, was about £250 and delivered to them from Germany in a few days. The cover for the cruise stalk was £5 or £6. The stalks don't come with the cover for the wiper stalk but they just unclip from the old one and transfer across.
