I would like to upgrade the throttle body on my stock 986 to one with a larger bore. I read that some people fitted one from a cayman. anyone knows what the best solution would be please?

By stock do you mean 2.5 or 2.7? In which case a 3.2 S throttle body may well be the best option.

I have the 2.5. the throttle body's diameter is 63 mm. I read you could fit one with about 74mm diameter.
is the 3.2's diameter within that range?
will it be a direct fit, or will i need reducers please?

2.5 has an idle speed control valve and is connected by cable, 3.2 is egas and no idle speed control valve - cant see how you could use the 3.2, to be honest cant see the reason you would want to - its not like you will suddenly catapult the 2.5 to 3.2 performance levels, enjoy the car for what it is and by modding you will introduce reliability issues

Glyn youre right, that;s what i'll do. I'm not one who usually likes to do much changes to a car, but i was reading on a site that an easy upgrade would be to fit a larger throttle body. There's a comany who will bore out your present throttle body but you have to send it to them, and I'm not going to bother to stay posting it to them and then waiting for it again till I can use my car!

My first Boxster was a 98 2.5, it was a fantastic car, extreemely reliable (never ever let me down) Servicing was very cheap and we all want that little bit more umph but the 2.5 isnt exactly slow.
The 3.2 i had was not as reliable, the gearbox second gear baulk (which is quite normal for the getrag box) wasnt as slick, sure i had more power and i did have to do quite a lot of maintenance on it, serviced meticulously but still broke down in Germany - what a palava that was getting home and returning to collect the car two weeks later.
Lots of spares available for the 2.5 too and because of this you get them cheap as you dont need to go near an OPC.

Enjoy your car

Your'e right Glyn. thinking about it it's quite a fun car to drive. I dont use it daily, but it still puts a smile on my face when i use it on twisty roads, the handling is great. just though i might gain some more power by upgrading the throttle body, but i'm not going to bother any more!
