986 ULEZ compliance

Posting here to raise awareness

There has been a very active thread over on BOXA.NET regarding 986 owners and the imminent ULEZ zone in London, long story short they have found their cars would be subject to the charge, but have successfully challenged it on an individual basis and had their cars records updated and received confirmation from TfL that they are exempt.

The summary of the process is:

Get a certificate of conformity (CoC) from Porsche - the route being contact Porsche UK, who contact Porsche mothership who provide the certificate.

On receipt check the NoX value - if below the Euro 4 NoX number for petrol engines then email to TfL, who respond with a confirmation.

I don't "have a dog in this fight" ( I don't have a 986 ) so I don't have sample CoC's or Emails that I am in a position to share - but thought I would share for the greater good - at least one member on BOXA has gone from "want to sell my 986" to "all sorted, it's exempt" in about 4 weeks.

The thread is here https://www.boxa.net/topic/80391-986-ulez-compliant/ - you need an account - it's free ......

Hope it helps someone.

Also check your V5 registration document to see if if states the emission amounts, the V5 for our 986 (2001 2.7) states the emission levels and this was sufficient to prove ULEZ compliance, so no certificate of compliance was required.

The key emission is for NOx that has to be no more than 0.08g/km.

Then notify TFL to update their database for your car.

Hope this helps

as a follow up a BOXA member just got fined for Birmingham clean air zone in his 986 that is exempt from the London ULEZ charge but not for the Birmingham one.

he found this gov site that lists all the clean air zones and allows you to check your vehicle for each of them.

https://vehiclecheck.drive-clean-air-zone.service.gov.uk/air_zones/compliance

digging further the Birmingham one seems to have the same nox requirement as the others so this is likely another case of multiple databases etc. hopefully he can get the entry corrected.

thought it worth posting the link so folks can check the current and upcoming zones to make sure that the backend database is correct for any/all that may impact your use of purchase/sale of a vehicle “on the cusp”

Hi all. Just to add to this post. I contacted Porsche and they confirmed they can provide a CoC for cars registered in the UK from 1997 onwards. Send an email to contact@porsche.co.uk and they will send you an application form. You'll need to return it with copies of the front and inside pages from your V5c.

Once the application is received, it could take up to 28 days for that to arrive at Porsche HQ, and then they'll forward to your registered address.

Then you have to register your car with TFL - The TFL requirements are posted here in case anybody else needs to go this route - no idea how long that process will take.

Update: I recently completed the attached Certificate of Conformity request, and sent to Porsche GB (you can either email to Contact@porsche.co.uk or stick in the post). They said it could take up to 28 days to get a reply, but within 10 days, I got the CoC for my Car and it clearly showed the NOX = 0.065g/km. The EUR4 standard for ULEZ is 0.08g/km or less. I tsent this certificate and my V5 scans and sent to TFL. I was advised this could take up to 10 days, and it was processed the same day. My car is now registered as being compliant to ULEZ!

My car is 1998 986 Petrol 2.5l.
