Hi I am in the process of selling my 3.2 carerra and considering buying a Boxster. In my price range it appears I could buy a low mileage 986 or a newer but higher mileage 987. I was just wondering which would be the better option and is there anything I should look out for.

Well jerry, I guess its the actual car you pick and buy in the end that really answers your question, you must get a good car more importantly and then your be happy either way, a lot of people would favour a 987 - ie as a later model maybe a way to go and in some ways even the 2.7 is supposed to be pretty good, however if you are looking at longterm ownership then depreciation is not so important and remember the more you spend the more you lose and a good S car is always going to be worth ten grand or so in years to come in my view, given its looked after. Remember Road tax is a lot more on some of later model S versions, personally I own and have a 3.2 S reg Sept 2004 986 model and
its only done 12k from new as I bought it from a guy who only used it in the summer and I have had it 2 and a half years and its not missed a beat and all I can say is after owning a fantastic 944 turbo for many many years its a car that really has surprised me with its roadholding, performance and all round refinement, in fact I only bought it as I retired and thought I should update for longterm enjoyment, although maybe in my case I may have to sell at some point ,given my wife's recent health and although I bought it with long term ownership in mind, after 2.5 years I have not regretted it,keep them maintained correctly and I am sure you will love them, only downside I find is 2 can go away for a week but not to the savoy.

After 5 x 911's I no longer needed the 2+2 option and switched to my preferred choice ie 2 seater roadsters back in 1997!

Since then I am now upto Boxster No. 5 a 2005 987 S which like all my previous Boxsters to date has given me nothing but total pleasure. All I can say is the newer the model you can get the better you will find the car as Porsche always seem to make minor changes every year and always for the better

Personally I have always preferred the extra bhp, torque and higher specification of a standard "S" as opposed to a similar priced but more option boxes ticked standard car.

If you are coming from a 3.2 Carrera I don't think which ever Boxster you go for will disappoint in the slightest as they are truly a great piece of kit and in Porsche world the most reasonable priced too [8D]

Good luck with the hunt [;)]

I owned a 2003 facelift model (glovebox, glass rear screen, 260hp engine) 986 for about two years before i upgraded to a 2006 987 3.2S. The 987 is better in almost every respect in my view (particularly build quality and interior room).

Good luck!
