987.1 Gearbox oil drain/fill plug seals?

Hi folks,

Hoping you will be able to help me with my quest to have all the correct parts at hand when I go to change my gearbox oil. 3.4L, 6 speed manual.

This task has never been an issue with any other vehicle I have or do own, but this Boxster thing is playing hard to get.
According to the Porsche centres here in Scotland they are unable to determine if there are sealing washers fitted to the gearbox drain and fill plugs, so they cannot provide me with the parts nor provided part numbers! A situation I find very bizarre, and worrying since the car has a full OPC service history.

Anyone out there had this experience and come out the other side more informed than the OPC?
I am hoping for conformation that they exist, and if possible their part numbers.
I would normally reuse gearbox drain plugs and just fit new sealing washers, but perhaps these drain and fill plugs are self sealing and need to be replaced once opened.

I posted this question on Planet 9 and one suggestion is that the plugs have a conical sealing face much like a brake bleed nipple. Anyone confirm this before I start the job and possibly end up stranded.

Many thanks for any help,

Craig

You don't say where in Scotland ...in the central belt you could ask these people for advice .I personally have no technical knowledge even though I have had 3 Boxsters . Surprised the OPC cannot help

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info!

I tried Aberdeen and Glasgow OPC's. Neither could confirm or deny a sealing washer. Both said they would e-mail once they had spoken with others. Both have not e-mailed.
I had heard mention of SP Auto before, they may be getting my servicing business if they are able to talk with any authority on this subject.

All the best!

Hi there,
I have changed the gearbox oil on my 986,
And I don't think I changed the washers just made sure of the correct
Torques in Nm,but am not about 987.
Your best option have a look on Pelican parts to see how to change gearbox oil!
I am sure they have an online article for this!
Good luck!

Highly confusing. The workshop manual says "Clean oil drain plug and screw in with a new sealing ring", but the PET parts catalogue doesn't show a sealing ring!

Confusing indeed!

Some online shops show a plug, some show a plug and make mention of the need for a sealing ring and some after-market parts show a plug and sealing ring.

I have ordered both the gearbox and engine drain plugs from Dimple products (Magnetic drain plugs) in the USA. They show a plug with a heavy duty magnet and a sealing ring.
This combined with my thread tape and copper washer selection box should prevent me from being stranded.
I certainly didn't expect such a hard time preparing for this 'simple' maintenance. Can't wait to see what I come across when go to fit the plenum,T/B and software, but I'll be leaving that adventure till spring.

I will confirm what I find when I pull the plug in a couple of weeks time.

Thanks to all for your input.
