987.2 / 2009 / 2.9: corroded suspension tops/bushes (?)

I’m not sure what mechanically needs to happen but an indie who did my pre sales inspection said the same about the prospective Boxster I was looking At. When I asked for a figure, it’s not cheap.…

Front shock corrosion fix £1200.00+ vat+ additional parts as necessary (we recommend springs, additional springs, top mounts etc) as you are only paying for the parts

My Indie said in late Sept 2022 that the tops of the front suspension legs were looking corroded, a 'common problem'.
What part(s) are they referring to please?
What is the job entailing if they are close to failing?
The car passed it's MoT a month ago without issues anywhere.

`Looking corroded` is not a particularly helpful diagnosis, it requires a closer `wheel off` inspection

I would assume that they are noting ...

[ul][*]Surface corrosion above the `addition spring` i.e. rubber bump stop (9) and the underneath of the `supporting mount` i.e. top mount (3) [/ul] and / or

[ul][*]Top of the shock absorber tube (1) [/ul]

Thank you Andrew, most helpful as ever!

There is a kit of parts for sale on design911 with all those parts in it, there for a reason I would think. Must be a diy job?

Welcome Graham ...

See Porsche Cayman S Porsche Boxster 987 2005-2011 Left Front Shock Absorber & Hub | eBay for reference to corroded parts

I would doubt / hope that yours is nowhere near `failing`, if similar to above a good wire brushing / coating may suffice. I assume that there are no `noises` from the bearing - top mount ?

DIY ... as long as you have / hire a spring compressor. The M14 - 22mm top nut (NB. Allen key required to hold the damper shaft) will need a good tug [;)]

Just found a great diy couple of vids of doing the job, all easy meccano stuff.

Whew.

The suspension on the car is utterly tight, not a knock or groan anywhere and all original @ 76K miles.

If it isn't broken I won't be fixing it!

just trying to get a feel for it should things go south.

The 2 vids do not show a compressor for the spring, you can get the top nut on (just) and screw it all tight.

I think there si an 18mm a/f nut involved (!) and an impact gun would be an investment.
