987.2 Boxster 6 year service

Fellow Boxster owners, just about to book my car in for its 6 year service and the OPC quote I am getting is working out like this:

Minor Service 375
Brake Fluid 95
Replace Drive Belt and Air Filter Cartridge 417

My car has 7,000 miles, so hardly used and I am wondering how Porsche can charge over 400 to replace the alternator belt ?? The rest of the quote looks OK although I may take my own oil as I work for Mobil.

I did a search online and nobody seems to complain about the cost of the belt change maybe its me being tight!

ps. car is a 987 Spyder.

Any advice?

With your history of the Porsche brand I'm surprised you're posing this question. As you know, the best sports cars may cost a bit to service properly. Just how it is.

Buy new and your servicing in the early years is low but you may suffer depreciation.
Later, depreciation slows and costs of servicing increase.
This is how it has always been.

Well Revolution Porsche, respected Indy up here in Yorkshire quote £75 for changing the poly belt on a 987.2. Given a minor is £234 and brake fluid £65 it makes the opc's belt and air cartridge look way out, unless the the air cartridge is a fortune. Worth double checking with them, and asking the question I think.

You could ask another PC for a quote and don't forget your PCGB 10% members' discount.

+1 for Revolution. My car is due a big service Inc coil packs. Been quoted by Porsche in Edinburgh £1170. Revolution £400 to £500 cheaper and that would pay for a nice weekend in Yorkshire

I'd like to use the OPC (and did last time round) but can't justify paying this premium

can I ask, if you have the extended porsche approved warranty do you have to use the OPC for servicing?

I don't have warranty on my car and am not going to get it, since the OPC want me to pay a fortune for a crap Moll battery as mine has a bosch and also to change all 4 tyres that are now 6 years old even though they have 5mm tread left. I was tempted to change the tyres but on the Michelin website it says they are good for 10 year maximum assuming they are inspected each year and have no issues.

I may well look at an Indy I have a lot around here to choose from ( Parr, 9E, Addspeed etc)

First get a quote from your favourite local independent, they may compete in some way.
Second Belt change is max 30min its a pain as it's behind the seats you certainly don't need an OPC to do it, but is it a check box in your service book.

Third take your own oil as they will charge £100+

With the mileage you are doing is the £1300/£1400 for the warranty worth the cost, if you have one and want to continue then you should stay with OPC incase you have a claim otherwise they may try to wriggle out.

Given the servicing costs whoever does it I personally would use the car a lot more and enjoy it. I accept it's a Spyder so you may want to keep the miles lowish for resale value but I would enjoy it a bit more.

very good point, I only bought the car in December and not used a lot over the winter but I intend to use much more this summer!

Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions.

I would suggest that this was a genuine mistake. These things happen, just goes to show the need to test what we're told and to do our own research.

I had mine serviced at OPC Newcastle a few weeks ago. I got quotes from a couple of independents and took those to the OPC who matched the lowest one. Worth asking!

on the older models 986,987 my opc do cheap deals on service,as long as car is 10 years old or more , I asked about this as my 981 is 4 years old and they said the car has to be at least 10 years old to get the special service rate,i think with the older cars Porsche were losing out to independents and dropped the service prices ,I did ask and I can supply my own oil for service as they wanted £110 for 8 litres (I picked up 20 litres of mobile 1 new life for under £120,free postage ,from Germany) see link below
