987.2 Coolant advice

The coolant in my Cayman 987.2 was flushed, replaced & system bled 500miles ago when the thermostat was replaced by a reputable specialist.

Seems the levels have dropped & I need to top them up. What is the best method to top up? Would bottled water be OK?

Looking at another thread on here it appears this should not be a concern.. that the level can drop after air pockets clear in the system. Correct?
Leaks were checked as part of the system flush with none found.

Phil,

If you're really fussy you could top up with distilled water. Maybe you should ask your specialist what they used?

As you say, it's quite possible that there were small air pockets present after the system was bled which have cleared in the last 500 miles or so.

Just top up the level and keep an eye on it for a while.

It's not unusual for the level to drop following a refill. If it's substantial, then you will need to top up with coolant. Porsche use a special long life fluid, but if you're unsure, return to your reputable specialist to ascertain what he used.

If it's a small amount, then distilled water will be fine. Ask someone with a dehumidifier, they'll no doubt have gallons to spare. [;)]

I find the method of testing the level is pretty poor on the Cayman, it can only be expected to be up to the upper mark when hot and since you shouldn't open the filler until it has cooled by which time the cooling liquid has dropped below the lower level! Personally I monitor the temp on the temp dial and also when I occasionally remove the cap ( cold ) check the comparable wetness of the upper and lower level marks, if the lower is wet and the upper dry then it has at least been in the zone when hot. If both are dry and there is no visible liquid then add a small amount of Porsche's own antifreeze or whatever the garage used.

Hi everyone, thanks for the responses.

The specialist was shut over the weekend, and having plans to use the car on Saturday the advice here was useful.

Managed to call my local OPC, who, despite never using for a service or work were very helpful and advised me.

Will be considering them for future work. In the meantime ordered a top up bottle of Porsche's own anti freeze.
