987.2 loss of power while driving

I had a bit bit of a scare recently where the power seemed to switch itself off. I hadnt driven for 3 days, started the engine drove for about a minute and then as i took a corner at a slow speed the power went, locking the steeing wheel, switching off the engine and the handbrake seemed to also be immobolised. Has only Has anyone has a similar experience? The cars seems to be fine now but would be very worrying if it happened at speed. There are no warning signs on the system at all.

It sounds as though you had a catastrophic electrical failure which stalled the engine and stopped the pump powering the PAS. Apart from the hill-start function the 987.2 handbrake is a purely mechanical device, so I can’t see how it could be immobilised (i.e. off) unless you meant that it was actually applied in which case perhaps the electrical glitch caused the hill-start function to activate?

If you had no warning lights or error messages and the car’s now working OK it’s impossible to say what caused the problem unless you can run some Porsche-specific diagnostics (PIWIS or equivalent) to see if some error codes have been generated.

Presumably your battery is in tip-top condition? Check that the connections are secure and get the battery checked-out … a battery supplier will be able to do this for you, probably FOC.

I’d be driving with a measure of caution for a while in case it happens again … hopefully not! [:(]

thanks Jeff, i thought it might be the battery so will have that checked. Its a 2012 car. The handbrake felt completely lose when it happened which is strange, as you say its mechanical. it couldnt be related to the brake discs being rusty could it? The pads are fine but the discs are rusty. The last mechanic said they were fine and would last a lot longer as long.

the handbrake is fine no, but ive just noticed that 3 out of 4 of the PDK indicators are no longer appearing -P,R,N only D gears appear.

With PDK in the mix it could be anything because the DME (digital motor electronics) and TCM (transmission control module) talk to one another. As I said earlier, you need to run some Porsche-specific diagnostics to see if any error codes have been generated to have any chance of fathoming out what’s happening.

Just to repeat, firstly check the battery. All sorts of problems seem to get thrown-up due to faulty batteries, exacerbated no doubt by cars not being used very much over the past 18-months or so.

Hi Jeff,

So i took the 987 to the mechanic and had a a diagnostics check. All that came up was there were some readings of fluctuations in power. Nothing really specific. They then checked the battery and found whoever owned the car previously had put the cheapest battery possible in there and it was not adequate. I think it was Lion car battery, theyve now replaced that with Bosche! As for the P,R,N not being on the screen and only the gear numbers in D, they said they dont think porsche had those in there anywhere, and its just the right light signalling which you are in.

Hopefully replacing the suspect battery with a quality item and with the correct rating will have fixed the problem. Having said that, the 987-series cars were fitted with Moll batteries, an obscure make, and the 981 (and maybe the current 718?) series cars had Banner batteries. I’ve never been able to understand why Porsche don’t fit a decent brand of battery like Bosch or Varta.

Sorry I can’t help with the PDK visual mode selection issue … my 987.2 CS is manual.

Jeff

A bit of diligent Internet searching recently seemed to imply that Bosch, Banner and Varta are all made in the same factory. I recently bought a Bosch which is externally physically identical to the 8 year old original Banner, down to all the case moulding details and even the little holes that the temporary terminal covers clip into. Bosch came with 5 year guarantee, delivered next day from Tayna Batteries.
